Post UK and other European artists - pencil, paper, supply info

I'd like to gather some information that is specific to European artists.

Please use this thread to add information regarding good papers, pencils, books, supplies, or online art suppliers in the UK or other European countries. Eventually, this thread will be added to the Hall of Fame.

Has anyone found Stonehenge paper there? What about good equivalent papers?

Hi, I don't buy online, I tend to use local art shops. However to add to the list of 'manufacture-res'

Derwent do some nice CPs and water CPs.

Windsor and Newton do a large range of papers, mainly water colour paper in the shop I go to, but they do a paper called 'Lana' . It is 130gsm and nice and smooth, and is sold as paper for graphite, colour pencil and ink.

Also seen Canson paper here (about £1.30 a sheet!!).

I've never seen any Stonehenge paper in any of the shops here or in mail order catalogues. Next time I pop into the art shop I'll ask them if they have heard of it.

Hope the above is of help.

Hails from Netherlands
Thumbs up CP Supplies in the Netherlands

Hi All,
Sorry to bring this old thread up to the front, but I wanted to add to the info here.

Peter van Ginkel Kunstenaarsbenodigdheden

They can speak to you in English!!! So you don't have to know Dutch and they are very nice people.

The store I go to, in Utrecht, told me it was best to call their head office in Zwanenburg if you wanted to have something shipped to another European country and that they would be happy to do so.

The address/info for their warehouse/head office (hoofdkantoor) is:

Physical address:

Peter van Ginkel Kunstenaarsbenodigdheden
Dennenlaan 28
1161 CR Zwanenburg
Nederland

or Mailing address:

Peter van Ginkel Kunstenaarsbenodigdheden
Postbus 33
1160 AA Zwanenburg
Nederland

Telephone: 31 020 407 44 07 Fax: 31 020 407 44 00

e-mail: [email protected]

Website: http://www.petervanginkel.nl/
It is in Dutch, but I think art supplies are fairly obvious even if you don't speak/read the language.

Open times for the head-office/warehouse are: Mon. to Fri., 9:00am to 5:30pm Closed Saturdays (Holland is one hour ahead of the UK)

Peter van Ginkel will ship to destinations outside of the Netherlands. You'll have to contact them for more info on shipping costs and minimum ordering.

Supplies they stock for CP users are:

Paper (Papier in Dutch):

Fabriano line of papers as well as Arches, and Reeves-BFK – all in large sheets. The Arches & Fabriano papers are available in watercolor paper or printmaking paper, so you have the full range of choices and textures to work on. BFK is a printmaking paper. The store in Utrecht had some Arches watercolor papers in pads, but did not stock the Fabriano in pads.

Colored Pencil (Kleurpotlood in Dutch):

Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils, sets and openstock:
Prices on openstock Polys: 1.20 euro each. 120 pencil set in metal box: 139.95 euro ( prices do not include the sales tax and are the current 2003 prices)

Watercolor pencils ( sets and openstock):

Faber Castell-Albrecht Durer Aquarelpotlood (watercolor pencil). Prices on openstock Albreccht Durers: 1.20 euros each and 120 pencil set in metal box 139.95 ( prices do not include sales tax and are current 2003 prices)
and they also stock a line of Cretacolor watercolor pencils made in Austria, unfortunately the price on these is not listed in the catalog I have.

Regarding blenders:

Turpenoid:
Peter van Ginkel does make an odorless turpenoid product (environment safe and all that) called "Shellsol K Oplosmiddel" You can use that to blend the CP. I don't know if they ship that, but you can ask.

I think you could use the Lyra Splender Blender with any colored pencil brand (i.e. Faber-Castell or others) ...Lyra is a German company that makes the Lyra Rembrandt color pencils. Unfortunately, Peter van Ginkel does not stock Lyra colored pencils.

Peter van Ginkel store locations, addresses, telephone and fax:

They have stores in these cities in the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Maastricht and Arnhem.

Open time for all stores is: Monday to Friday, 10:00am to 5:30pm and Saturdays, 10:am to 4:00pm (Holland is one hour ahead of the UK)

Here are the physical addresses, etc., of the stores :

Amsterdam: (does framing/sells framing supplies)
Bilderdijkstraat 99
1053 KM Amsterdam

Telephone: 31 (020) 618 98 27 Fax: 31 (020) 683 78 54

Arnhem: (does framing/sells framing supplies)
Nieuwe Kade 2
6827 AA Arnhem

Telephone: 31 (026) 442 33 34 Fax: 31 (026) 443 54 93

Utrecht: (does framing/sells framing supplies)
Van Lippe Biesterfeldstraat 14
3523 VB Utrecht

Telephone: 31 (030) 280 12 32 Fax: 31 (030) 280 12 09

Maastricht: (this store does not do framing)
Brusselsestraat 63-65
6211 PC Maastricht

Telephone: 31 (043) 323 39 39 Fax: 31 (043) 390 06 50

Zwanenberg: (Warehouse and head-office, not a store)
Dennenlaan 28,
1161 CR Zwanenburg

Mailing address:
Postbus 33
1160 AA Zwanenburg
Nederland

Telephone: 31 (020) 407 44 07 Fax: 31 (020) 407 44 00

Their prices are the best I've seen around the Netherlands for all art supplies and they have a full line of other supplies, oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencils, charcoals/pastels, brushes, sharpeners, canvas, museum board, etc.

They do have a catalog of supplies they carry, all prices listed in it do not include the sales tax ( which is currently 19%). The catalog is in Dutch, but many items are pictured and of course names are often in English. You can contact the head-office and ask for a current catalog (use the Postbus address listed above if you write them. (F.Y.I.: English is taught as a second language in all Dutch schools and the Dutch are amazingly fluent in English, so language should not be a problem)).

If you need to know anything else, just send me a PM. I'm happy to help out if I can

Judy

(For those of you who don't know Dutch, yes that is one long word "kunstenaarsbenodigdheden" ! = it means ( literally) artists' (kunstenaars) necessities (benodigdheden) and YES, it hurts to say it......LOL )

Hi All,

I've had very good service from www.discountart.co.uk based in Wakefield, west Yorkshire, they're very friendly & their return service is superb.

I've also dealt with www.berol.co.uk (the UK arm of Sanford) who sell the excellent range of "Verithin" pencils,as recommended by Dee Hammond in her book "Drawing Birds" ... the range consists of 36 colours but sells in wallets of 24 ... but if spoken to nicely, they will send you the other 6,priced individually.

Bye for now,

Re: UK and other European artists - pencil, paper, supply info

Successful CP artists in the UK (and I also know one in France), use Karismacolor. And it is the European version of Prismacolor. I believe the casing there is natural wood, but the quality is the same... I know a few colours are not carried, though. BeardedBob is a great source of into at WC!

Wouldn't it be more convenient to buy them there than ordering from the States?

Hi "Europe"

do you know any German, scandinavian or UK (or other European- but using english or german language!) online-suppliers that sells:

Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor and Talens van Gogh colored pencils
not watercolor-pencils

prefer open stock (but otherwise sets)

Thought this might be of use to someone.

I have ordered online from Jenisch Welt der Farben (World of Color) in Germany once without any problems.
http://www.world-of-color.de (German and English)
Colored pencils: Karismas and Polychromos, sets and open stock, some Lyra (I couldn't find the Rembrandts) and Stabilo pencils and also the Faber Castell Erasable CP's.
Papers from Canson, Whatman, Hahnemühle and others.
