"Always Bossed Around"

I've been doing so many florals lately, it felt nice to get back to my western roots with this piece. I was a horse gal for many years and no longer own any. This is based from my own photo ref of a scene across the road from my house in Arkansas. Poor little calf being the low man on the totem pole in the pasture ..8X11 Watercolor & Ink. C&C welcome.

Sharla, great piece! I love how you did the background, which is a constant losing battle for me every time I try to do one

I like this one, Sharla. Particularly I like the way your highlights define the two black cattle. Minimum of work, maximum results.

Beautiful painting, Sharla! It has such a lovely, overcast feel to it. I can sense the frustration of that poor calf by the set of his ears alone. I have seen that posture many times. Excellent work! I'm so glad you shared it with us.

Sharla...wonderfully done with big bold shapes and grouped values. I like the way you have kept the overall work from becoming 'overworked'.

Re: "Always Bossed Around"

Donna, I appreciate your remarking on the background. I have struggled with backgrounds more times than I could count so I do appreciate that.

scatdaddy - Gotta get those lines in there somehow or it would look like a big blob run together! Thank you for that point!

Jenna - horses are such bossy things in a pasture, and without another equine to boss around they are happy to use the calves LOL

Max - I was afraid I was coming close to overworking some of the fore and background colors so thank you for that

Re: "Always Bossed Around"

Wow, excellent watercolor! I agree with others about not overworking, well done. Nice depiction of the pecking order of the critters! You nailed their attitudes and mannerisms. I also like how most of the painting is greyish, and then you got the warm, orangish/brownish horse as the focal.

Sharla, super painting. The fore and background really do support the figures well. Great body language on the calf and horse.
