Just before dawn

This was done on Canson Mix Media Artboard. Nice because it works great with watercolor and doesn't have to be stretched. Mostly ink and a little Sennelier watercolor pan work. Forgot to take the picture earlier so had to photograph it in the frame. 8x10"

Re: Just before dawn

An interesting motif, especially the red roofs spice
up the black and white image!
Too bad that the real hero, the motive, is so small.
Please try again bigger.

Re: Just before dawn

This is a nice balanced composition, with dispersed seal and calligraphy just in the right spot for the flow.

I am glad you showed it in the frame, which beautifully supports the work.

I am curious:
-about the seal
-about the calligraphy
.....would be great if you could share something about those.

Hope we see more like this.

Re: Just before dawn

Good point. I'm sorry about that. The calligraphy is simply my name in Japanese Kanji characters. The seal is my last name's kanji in a stylized intaglio stamp. I have two stamps. One is from Japan (the smaller round one in the other submittals) and this one from China. It's larger and I like it on the larger paintings. Whereas on the small ones it's just too big.

Re: Just before dawn

A difficult motive to depict - just before dawn; but I suggest you need much more contrast in tonal value - much darker at the bottom in the low land and getting progressively lighter with height until the tip of the volcano is catching the morning sunlight. That mid-slope between the tree line and start of the snow needs some change in tonal value too - gradually getting lighter with height.
