I just read a thread about mixing acrylic and soft pastel, namely on watercolor paper. I have a piece in mind that I’d like to try with a layer of acrylic on pre-stretched canvas and then pastel on top.
Is there any reason this wouldn’t work?
Should I use fixative or not risk the colors?
Finally, is there a way to make the pastels’ color really pop more?
My first thought was “don’t do it”, but then I realized I was thinking of acrylics over top of oil pastels. I’m pretty sure you can do your oil pastels on top of acrylic, but you most likely will want to use some sort of fixative.
I have done this and not had a problem. Just make sure your acrylic is dry before you put the soft pastel on top, then use a fixative when you are finished.
