Oldies but Goodies- Henri Rousseau - Nov 13 - 27

Hello artist buddies and shy lurkers

Henri Rousseau - a well known artist will be out friend in studies these next two weeks.

Wikipedia starts off with these salient facts.......

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (May 21, 1844 – September 2, 1910)[1] was a French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naive or Primitive manner.[2][3] He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer) after his place of employment.[1] Ridiculed during his life, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality.

They also mention that though he was famous for painting jungles, he never left France.

Please, take some time the next two weeks to study Rousseau, copy or imitate him and share your adventure with us.

As a special challenge, how's about we each do a self portrait on a tiger or animal of our choice in Rousseau's naive style. WHAT FUN, eh?

June -I was hoping to see you on a lemur but you would have to put on your pixie suit for that

Here's where I've got to so far with my Rousseau study. 7 by 10 ins gouache on paper.

I mainly wanted to try the trick of painting the skin in one mid-tone and then adding highlights and darks over the top. Seemed to work OK. Not sure if I'll finish this. But rather good to paint it and get away from the Winter.

As you can see I've given Rousseau's lady-love a mermaid tail!! It seemed to cry out for it. And I've only included a fraction of the original work in my 'copy'.

The two week window for this thread closed two days ago and I still haven't made a contribution or begun the next thread. I'll aim to do both by tonight.

Was thinking of Rousseau early this morning and wondering when the 100th anniversary of his death is. (Sept. 2nd this year.) Poor Henri, unhappy, ridiculed, impoverished--(pauper's grave)--his paintings are worth millions now.

Found a photo of him on the net and painted this portrait.

Excellent Lawrence. I have a very good book on Rousseau called 'Jungles in Paris'....a birthday treat to myself. Have you seen this book?

Hi June, no, haven't seen the book.

There's an excellent series of 3 videos on Rousseau's work, the last 2 of which are animated. I especially like the last one.

Did another one today, this time with his big beret.

Thanks for the kind comment, Robin.

This is a joyous Messi after scoring the wining goal for Barça against Real Madrid. (Someone else might say it's after a part of Rousseau's painting of footballers. )
