Drying time for thin layers?

Evan,
You would know if your paint started to bead beading. It happens while you're trying to paint and it really is like water on a waxed car, it just wont stick. Or rather, it sticks to itself rather than the surface of the canvas.

I would be vary wary of using that krylon stuff. Touch dry in 10 - 15 minutes??

Paint layer which is "dried to touch" do not means "dried to work" on top of it.
I guess, we have two way to speed work with layered painting. One way is Bouguereau`s siccative way, and the second is Sid`s Acrylic underpainting way.

yes, thanks to the computer geek of wetcanvas, I have literally become unstuck in time, now I never know where I really am, or I was, or I may someday be !

Unless the uneven gloss is a sign of beading.

Uneven gloss is just a sign of differences in the amount of oil left on the surface of a dried paint film. Some paint areas may remain more oily and thus more glossy and those are prone to result in beading. Try to paint with watercolor on a piece of glass and you should then see exactly what beading is. Beading happens while you are painting and is like Ron described, it is very obvious and annoying when it happens to you, you can't lay the paint down where you want it to stay.

Just because alkyd is flexible enough to prevent cracks even when underlayer loose 70% of its original volume after 1-3 month drying time. Acrylic looks much safer in that situation.
It might be much much safer to use acrylic undrpainting than non-dried soft oil paint layer. When chasing the ghost speed at any cost.

That krylon spray does seem scary to use. Ill look for reviews on it.
Ive tried acrylic underpainting for a dead layer and it was a bad idea. I need time to blend

try open acrylics. Search Golden Opens. You won't have weeks to blend, but you will have 2 days - is that enough? Keep your palette in a closed box overnight and should be fine 2-3 days. I wouldn't put Krylon on anything. If it was so wonderful and stable, long term, a million artists would be using it by now.

When I get the money Im going to get black,white and maybe a few cool and warm colors for the dead layers. I think this will work great and worth a try.I dont mind a few days of dry time. I will want to use oil for the color glazes.

I allow up to 3 weeks to dry between layers, some of my works dries even more time....

I think if you work in Flemish technique ( Mr. A.Antonov technique ) you must have a lot of patience. Actually I do not understand, why artist must have to rush and produce an enormous ammount of low quality painting instead of concentrating on just a few works but with intention to high quality finish. If the artist wants to finish his (her) work in a few days, Flemish technique shouldn't be used at all. There is another techniques like Alla prima, for instance, which allows to finish artwork very quickly.

After all, when artist work in this technique , usually he ( she) works on several paintings in the same time ( what Mr. A.Antonov mentioned as well )
