November Challenge

Hola Amigos - Welcome to the November Challenge. I'm hoping you will enjoy some of these subjects because they include some of my very favorite places in the Southwest. There's mostly landscapes (hey I'm a landscape guy so that's what I photograph) so I apologize up front to you 'critter people' but that's what a challenge is all about, right? The challenge is open to everyone and comments are welcome. Please keep the comments constructive - check yer pistols at the bar and don't start a'swingin' unless somebody's askin' fer it. I hope you have fun with these!!!

~Don

One of my favorite views of Shiprock off Hwy 64 west of the town of Shiprock, NM in NW New Mexico. It's a sacred place to the Navajos.

Here's some cool ruins NE of Flagstaff out by Sunset Crater looking toward The Painted Desert. Wanted to preserve some details in the ruins so I had to overexpose the sky - make one up, I do it all the time.

This is Mount Humphreys - the tallest peak in AZ - at sunset during the monsoon season.

This is a still life I set up a while back but never painted. Looks like it might be fun.

Taken from the N. Rim of the Grand Canyon - If you haven't seen the N. Rim you haven't seen the Grand Canyon.

This is Navajo National Monument in northern Arizona between Tuba City and Kayenta. A beautiful spot for AZ colors and rock formations.

How can you beat last light in Sedona?

Another shot of Mt. Humphreys with a snowcap.

This awesome birdhouse is on an old barn that belongs to one of my former solar clients outside of Flagstaff.

These are large volcanic cider cones to the E of Flagstaff. Paragliders launch from the top and catch thermal currents way up high and sometimes they land 40-50 miles away.

This is just E of Kayenta, AZ off highway 64 looking due N toward Monument Valley.

This old desert branch is actually on the Frisbee Golf Course in Farmington, NM - Frisbee Golf is awesome in the desert and sandstone
cliffs of NW New Mexico.

On a hike in the San Juan Mountains SW Colorado.

Another shot hiking in the San Juan's.

Well, have at it friends!

Re: November Challenge

Don..some great photography. I'm not familiar with the challenge concept. Are we challenged to paint one of these, to paint all of these or are we simply challenged in our ability to do.

Re: November Challenge

Holy Cow Don!!! These pictures are awesome and so many great images to choose from. Definitley count me in on this months challenge. I like that some of the images seem relatively easy and some are very complex and detailed. This should be fun and interesting to see what developes. Thanx for hosting this months challenge.

Deb - When I was going through my photos choosing the ones I wanted to post, I actually thought of you when I chose the one east of Kayenta. But I'd love to see you do any of them. ~Don

Re: November Challenge

Thank you, Don, for the photo references. They are all so tempting.

I did two with oil pastel on surfaces that I have never done before.

Pen Sketchers' 70 lb 5.5 x 8.5 inch
This surface is more for pen and ink but since I have colored one with a reddish wash, I gave it a try. Not a bad surface.

Mungyo Artist grade oil pastel

This one I did it on Classic Cachet beige 100 lb 4x6 inch that I usually reserve for watermedia.

Had to try resist with oil pastel and watercolor.

Mungyo Artist grade oil pastel
Daniel Smith watercolor
In the end added a bit of Portfolio watersoluble oil pastel to absorb the last bit of moisture.

Re: November Challenge

@Jen - It's my pleasure to do this. I look forward to seeing what you come up with - you can always stick a buffalo in one of them.

@Sandra -Boy you don't waste any time do you? Cool stuff. I like the Sedona one, especially your additions to the sky.

@John - Thanks. I hope you do find time to take a shot at these. Time is always the issue isn't it?

~Don

Re: November Challenge

Wonderful references Don! I hope to make time to participate this month - there are too many things that I have to do that get in the way of the things I want to do!

Re: November Challenge

Sandra, you are faster than a bullet!

Don, you are too funny. I promise to leave my pistols at home ... great photos, I wish I had time to paint them all!

I actually painted about a year ago something similar, thought I post it.
