I guess one more version of the Tetons and aspens won't hurt. It's 8 X 10, drawn with a ballpoint pen on Canson Bristol Vellum 100 lb.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Thanks for the comments Kindra and Jenna.

Very nice work Scatdaddy! The cowboy and herd doesn't hurt a bit. I had the same idea in mind for my painting with just a horse and rider. Great job on those trees and the Tetons are certainly recognizable.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Wow, Marcus. That is one beautiful painting. Makes me want to get back up there one more time.

Great job Scatdaddy. Have you ever been up there? One time when we were there I made Bob take me out to the famous barn everyone paints and your painting reminds me of what it must have been like when it was a working ranch.

You both have brought back some wonderful memories for me.........Lenore

Scatdaddy, you have some great control over a ballpoint pen! Beautiful drawing. I really like the feel of it and the composition. Love the trees, too.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Nice piece skatdaddy! I like how you added the horse and rider and the shimmer of light behind him is really nice too!

Lenore.. You have been busy! And I like your composition on this.. Good job!

Kindra.. I think your colors are bold, bright.. and I enjoy looking into your piece.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

I really struggled with this ref. I altered the composition a bit. But here it is.. 8x12 acrylic on canvas paper adhered to vinyl.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments! Scatdaddy, wow, that is beautiful along with the other paintings here. I was not happy with my "yellow mountains" and brought it over to mollerman's house to show him. (his facial expression of "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING" when he saw the part that I cropped out was actually commical) So, Mark, here is the revisited, revised version of my yellow mountians. Also, the fixative that I am using is not from a can but one that you have to buy a spray bottle for and mix it. I also leave it taped to the board in an upright position to avoid one of the problems that was mentioned. Thank you for your advice!! I have fixed the clouds and other areas of it by putting more pastel on it. That seemed to be the only way to do that. Well, here it is:

Catherine, what vibrant colors! I wish I could paint with your style but I keep getting caught up with my left and right brain fighting on "how real" I can make it look. I love your paintings!!

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Catherine, despite your struggles, you did a great job on that painting! You have a very nice sense of atmosphere and depth in this painting. Great job!

Barb, the tweaks you made to this painting really make it stand out and work well. Great work fixing the clouds. All in all, a lovely painting!

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Barb.. Thank you for the kind words.. It encourages me to continue learning.

Barb.. The issue I had with the ref was the yellow/orange mountains.. Same as you were experiencing. I made the mistake of, as you put it, right/left brain. More because of the overpowering sense of vibrant color portrayed in the ref. photo. As you probably found out there was lots of blue in the mountains than your brain wanted to let you in on. I changed the image over to B&W and used what I know about colors and distance talk to me instead. Very tough thing to do but once you get the hang of it Barb your brain parts will live in harmony, well at least on the canvas!
There is definitely an improved sense of depth with the value shifts you changed. The mountains are now the focus with out the other elements competing for the privilege but still living in harmony. Good job!
It must be wonderful to have a mentor close by. Mine lives 50 mi from me and doesn't do internet.. Only get down to see him two or three times a month.

Re: MARCH MONTHLY CHALLENGE - Everyone Welcome

Lenore, they are so tiny yet they have so much depth in them. The first one is very storybook like and the second one has great perspective.

Marcus, thank you for all the photo references and your WIP. Totally enjoy the see how the colors work together. Beautiful piece. The fluffiness of the clouds and the light on the foliage!! Totally love the little bits of flowers. Also the bits of yellow in the second piece brightens up the whole piece.

Catherine, I like your style. Is this your normal color scheme and style. Very striking!

Barb, love the bold approach to your piece in colors. The clouds are so good!

Maria, the pot and the brick it rests on are so dimensional. Very nice!

Scatdaddy, so good to see your pieces again. Full of sunlight even in black and white! Always enjoy your take on lighting.

Kindra, good morph there. I could already imagine a sleeping dragon in the green hills.

I didn't have much stamina these couple of weeks to paint. Too much going on at home. But here are the first two for warm up.

Derwent and Faber Castell Pitt Pastel pencils
Academie 80 lbs Heavyweight sketchbook

5x4 inch
