Re: April Artistís Madness Monthly Challenge

Everyone knows I'm mad as a hatter anyway...already been drawing or painting daily since 2007, so this won't be a problem except I don't always do SW/W art. The smaller size might be more workable, too. Thanks for the challenge.

8x10", oil on board, "A barn in Nevada", painting time: 1.5 h

Barn in my reference had rocks half way, like I painted above, (do they look rocks? ) and then wood built till the roof. Is this a typical barn in southwest?

Sandra, Ive never done with watercolor, but to me your cactus looks really good. Lovely! Thanks for starting to post!

Deb, Great ideas! Corn! I hadn't thought about that. Thanks!

I even found yesterday cowboy boots in my wardrobe, I had forgotten long ago I bought cowboy boot because they were popular atm, but haven't used them for a long time.

Re: April Artistís Madness Monthly Challenge

Cindy, thanks! Your daily painting is lovely, bright flowers show so well from the grey rock.

Tomorrow more painting, right? Oh, this will be a lot of painting, 30 all together. I have reserved a big pile of boards and it is only enough for two weeks. I need to find more in case I last in this madness till the end of the month.

Happy daily painting everyone!

Re: April Artistís Madness Monthly Challenge

Aaaand we're off! Wow, some excellent first pieces by you all!

Sandra, well done! You're always the first one out of the gate. I love this cactus! You make watercolors look easy.

Moscatel, this is fantastic! Great technique, and the brushstrokes are beautiful. Good work!

Cindy, how pretty this is! The colors are so nice and spring like. Good work!

Hate to say this, but I may not be able to participate, at least not as much as I had first hoped. I started to think that this scratchboard commission needs my time the most right now as I promised to have it done soon. Sorry Donald. I will be rooting you all on with gusto though, and may just churn out a couple paintings of my own if time permits.

Great job on the cactus Sandra.

Love the barn, and yes, they look like rocks to me, Moscatel.

Re: April Artistís Madness Monthly Challenge

Well, all afternoon sitting in the dentist's chair, nothing to think about but painting! Here is my little contribution, 5x3.5 watercolor of a wild sunflower growing behind the house. Time: 45 minutes

SANDRA that is a stunning cactus!
MOSCATEL I love your scene!
CINDY your texture and rocks really do it for me!

So good to know we can post sketches/drawings as I'm meeting myself coming and going; with the new Cline Shale discovery our town sits in the middle of, am doing lots of oilfield scenes as fast as possible

Re: April Artistís Madness Monthly Challenge

Congrats to Sandra for posting first (but I'm not surprised either! )!

Moscatel - glad to have you here and joining in. Nice job on the barn.

Cindy - Love the texture of the rock and the contrast with the bright flowers.

Kay - Very nice - a colorful one.

I finished a 9x12 watercolor landscape today, but haven't photographed it yet. Will post that one soon.

#1 - Fort Casey Lighthouse

Hi folks,

Well, so far so good - one day, one painting.

This one is 9x12 watercolor on Arches 140# cold press paper. The location qualifies as western, I think (the Pacific Northwest is a proud part of the West!). This is at what is now a park and conference center, but was previously a fort from WWII. The Northwest was considered vulnerable to air attack, and so a number of anti-aircraft batteries were located around Puget Sound during the war. Fortunately they were never needed. Of course, the lighthouse here was not part of the fort per se, it just happened to be located there as well. This is on Whidbey Island, home of the Whidbey Island Naval Airstation, and the big landslide you may have seen on the news recently, with a huge section of high bank sliding into Puget Sound, taking some homes with it and making multiple others uninhabitable.

What I really liked about this scene when I took the reference photo was the looming storm in the distance, which created a threatening sky, but the lighthouse was still in the late afternoon sun.

Here is an itsy bitsy quick abstract SW atc! It actually looks better in person, as the stars and moon are very shiny the starts look way better.
