Oh wow. I loved the color masking article. Thank you for the link. It is fascinating to approach painting in a more cerebral way. By analyzing color more in depth than I have in the past, I hope to have more control over exactly which color I place down the first time, with less brush strokes and second guessing.

I know I'm bouncing around all the time between the left and right brain when I'm painting. Another great blogger - Stape Kerns (stapletonkearns.blogspot.com/) - said something like "learning to paint is like learning to play the violin". I think that's really true. There are always more and more layers that can be peeled back. That color gamut stuff is just like that, I got a big giant 'wow' when I discovered it. It helped a lot of things make more sense to me.

My daughter is a classical violinist--although she plays beautifully now, there were many younger years (at six years of age) of "peeling back the layers" so to speak--one's artistic journey is never truly finished. Indeed it is quite relevant for musicians as well as visual artists.

I too enjoyed the gamut analysis. It makes me want to go take a variety of the three primaries and make a bunch of charts so I can see all the possibilities. Quite scary this train of thought though, as I need to get outside more and put brush to canvas and get on with it all. *sigh* Sometimes I want to shush the left side.

Kathleen - if you do the wheels post your results. They would be fun to see. I did mine on a big sheet of cardboard. I'll post a picture if I can find it (a quick look around the studio didn't turn it up).

Here is an on-line gamut mask tool that I use with 20 interchageable making tools or you can design your own.

I never did get a chance to do my wheel yet. I just received my new Utrecht oil paints though. I bought a very limited palette:

Cad. Yellow Lemon Pure
Cad. Yellow Med
Cad. Red Light
Viridian
Ultramarine
Cad Orange (to mix various neutral grays)
Titanium White

I probably should do a wheel. That would give me a good understanding about this particular paint brand and color combos. Of course... I just wanted to dig into painting. I have 2 landscape plein air and one floral/garden plein air to post on the forum. Finding time to create the post---well, I'm working on that project.

Yes Kathleen, please post your color wheel results! Thanks Timon for the information, choosing colors has always been confusing for me and I just relied on guesswork which of course ended in frustration

I was using acrylics for my plein air painting but I really want to use my WSOs so I need to get my palette figured out!
