The U3A Art Workshop sketching this week was at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. The Temperate House is a great example of Victorian Engineering built in 1860 and Grade I listed. It houses over 10,000 plants – some so rare they aren’t seen in the wild.
However, the clue is in the name, Temperate  The interior of the glasshouse is hot and humid and definitely not sketcher-friendly, so humid that the Uni-Pin 0.1 packed up early-on and the sketch paper felt distinctly soggy.
There is a walkway in the roof around, the glasshouse and this is the staircase up to it …….
This sketch took 3 hours, lots of mineral water, two ice-creams and a welcome beer to finish.

Critique ? – Give Ron perhaps the finest collection of exotic plants collected from all four corners of the world & what catches her eye ? Any greenery is only used as a artistic device to ground the drawing & add contrast to & emphasis to the the iron work ! I can well see see where your sympathies lie .
you certainly earned your ice cream & beer
MikeJuly 11, 2019 at 12:37 pm #852676Thanks for your kind comments Mike.
Somehow my botanical efforts have never looked really convincing; my plants all end up looking like giant cabbages  – so I stuck to what I knew I could draw.

July 12, 2019 at 6:23 pm #852675I do like the plants around the architectural elements. Lots of work went into that. I would call it a finished work not just a sketch! Well done.
