Almost There! - Wensleydale

Here's todays painting. Another narrative scene from our walk from Aysgarth to Bolton Castle. This was the last stile before we walked up the steep hill to the castle. Hope you like it.

PS here's the original photo.

This is nice. I especially like the muted texture of the stonework on the foreground building.

Your stonework is really impressive, Doug! I like to paint stonework too... but mine are always closer up, so there are shadows, planes and surfaces to texturize the wall or fence.
Your painting gets better with each one you do!

Perhaps a little more indication of the light direction would help it, but very well done anyhow.

I have to agree with Hugh but overall a great painting.

When we look at a piece of art work it has to form some kind of connection to the viewer. It must evoke a memory or stir the imagination or it will fail to cause the person to return to it and examine it further. By painting some of natures hidden treasures I hope to bring the viewer back to places or times that are stored in their memories.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have already lightened the tree on the left, and will strenghten the shadows to make the light direction more obvious. I would have liked to put something dark behind the castle, but it would spoil the atmospheric perpective.

Regarding the stonework, I find that it is better to apply an underwash of various shades before you start, and add more texture/wash out areas after you have applied the stonework (with a flat brush).
