Ark Royal Mersey trials 1954,x/post marine

oils on canvas board, size 21x33 inches.
The composition is from my imagination, but i have used research and ref photos for accurate details of all the vessels.
The painting shows her having just left Cammell Lairds shipyard,Birkenhead for her trials. She was actually launched in 1950 ,but her design kept being updated, hence the 4 year gap!.She was finally commissioned in 1955.

I think it's great. I'm ex RN and it looks top notch to me. I remember a guy who used to paint ships in HMS Collingwood, the prices he charged seem so cheap now.

Thank you for your comment Carol!,I like creating historical paintings as accurate as i can,but at the same time use a color scheme that others may like even if they find the subject not interesting.

Nice job indeed. Maybe someday you can paint the original Queen Mary - it's docked in Long Beach, CA just a couple of miles from me. I've visited it many times, it's a beautiful historical treasure.

Thank you for your comment Alan!,the 1st painting that I ever sold was a water painting of the Queen Mary,in 1949.I sold it to a boy in my school who wanted to impress his quite wealthy mother,as his work.(chuckling)!.

Re: Ark Royal Mersey trials 1954,x/post marine

I should have mentioned that the other vessels in the picture are--isle of man ferry berthed at the Landing stage,in front of her are 2 Cock tugboats escorting the Ark Royal, the mersey ferry boat is the Wallasey and the fire and salvage vessel is the Vigilant, she is on stand by if needed.

That is wonderful!

And I remember her visit to Pearl Harbor in the mid-1970's. With her was an Australian destroyer. Shore Patrol duty that night was not the easiest.

An observation - smoke indicates wind is blowing from right to left, yet the chop seems to be moving perpendicular to the wind. Intentional?

Docpro...Thank you four your comment.
Mike L... Thank you for your comment and observation!,you are right the smoke does appear to be going directly from right to left!,however the Ark Royal is sailing due North and I know from old photographs that on that day the wind was blowing from the South-East,which means that the smoke should be coming towards you on an angle!.Truth be told I don't know how to paint smoke coming towards you!(smiling).
