Don, I would be very careful about lightening the background behind the melon.

The way you have it now, the melon is backlit, and your shadow in the front of the melon proves this. I like it a lot! I would be more inclined to darken the melon at the bottom, just like Sylvia suggested. Just dampen the paper and drop in a little colour in. But be careful, not too much.

You should print out your painting on water colour paper, and have a play with that. It would be a shame to mess too much with your painting. I do love your background. You have shown you know how to paint wet in wet.
