        Hi everyone,

Just a novice artist here who’s recently developed a penchant for Pen and Ink drawing. I’ve looked around the web of course, but was wondering if anyone wouldn’t mind listing their favorite artists in regards to Pen and Ink drawing? Help a newbie (and each other) discover more interesting artists? :)

In addition, I recall someone mentioning the various styles in pen and ink drawing, if it’s not too much trouble, could someone perhaps explain or show me the various styles that is most prominent? I do notice that different genres (nature/landscape/animals, urban/architecture, sci-fi/fantasy illustrations) all have their own style. For example, nature and architecture type drawings are typically more realistic, clean, and often times more detailed, while fantasy type illustrations are rougher in nature and its pen strokes, etc. Is that the different styles that this person was referring to?

My favorite so far: (don’t know many artists at the moment):

        Franklin Booth
        Norman Lindsay
        Gustave Doré
        Bernie Wrightson
        Frank Frazetta
        Willy Pogany
        Nicolas Delort
        Taylor Mazer
        Franz von Bayros

There has been one heck of a lot of excellent penmen throughout the late 19th & early 20th century that are certainly worthy of study.
Back then black & white line work with pen was the only way that books & magazines could be could be commercially printed.
This lead to a golden age in P&I drawing, serious artists channeled their energies wholeheartedly at this time & P&I as an art form the art took great leaps & bounds at this time.
The rewards back then were substantial for a really good P&I illustrator -they socialised with the Hollywood stars & were internationally famous !

Have you seen this free down load section here ?

it covers a lot of stuff from this period & is well worth a look.

Like I say there are many good ones to choose from – I like a lot of artists & on any particular day I might give a different answer !
But from memory two big hitters who were very commercially successful indeed were Charles Dana Gibson & James Montgomery Flagg.
I cannot recommend strongly enough the value in studying pen pictures very closely -don’t get blown away by their mastery – if you look long & close enough it is all there to see ! copy a small section of a drawing of artists you admire . There is no better way to learn & progress then one day you find yourself doing your own subjects in your very own style.

            Cheers Mike
