The organizers of the exhibit usually work with a receiving company to receive and return artwork that is shipped to the exhibit. That information is usually provided when you are accepted into the exhibit. If they do not provide you with those details, I would not ship to that particular show, as I would be suspect about what would happen to the artwork.

I use Call for Entries to look for juried shows. In the prospectus for each show the organizers list how they handle out-of-town entries. Usually you have to send the art in a package that can be re-used along with return postage if the work doesn’t sell. The local watercolor society puts on a national juried show every year and they have someone who will receive the selected entries and ship out the the unsold art at the end.

eta: I don’t know how other shows work, but here the the work is done on a volunteer basis. The money taken in from entries (accepted or otherwise) is used to pay for the juror to fly up and for the monetary awards. They also have some sponsors that provide other prizes.

What I have started to do is ship it in a box, then retrieve it in person.

No one in art tells you that there is a lot of travel involved.

Redfang thanks for your reply, very informative … I was looking at the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition and I couldn’t find much information about their shipping arrangements. Perhaps I missed something in the blurb.

Happy to help. If you go to their website there is more information. It’s an online only competition so there is no shipping involved. If your work is selected you’ll have to provide a high quality image for publication.
