Re: Recent Figure Drawings

I agree with Vivien, but we know you are a stickler for weight and balance. I would have sworn these were digital until I reread. I have a pretty good two light setup but you have balanced the pencil against the paper perfectly. Care to share your technique? Some on here struggle with reproducing the image

Thanks Nathan, Vivian, Bethany and David for your remarks.

David, I don't have a magic solution for taking good photos of work, about 3-4 years ago I lent my light setup to an artist friend who no longer talks to me, as he lives about 5 hours away I'll have to wait until I'm near his place again. I must have come across to him more critical than I intended.

Nowadays I fiddle with Photoshop either tweak the levels or tweak the gamma and or offset in exposure if they don't work to my satisfaction I will use the editing tools in apples' Photo program. The 2nd best set up is having 4 lights, 2 each side and put your palm on the paper like a karate chop and see if the light falls on both sides of the palm evenly if there is a shadow more on one side adjust until it is even. I used to do this outside in the shade with the work on an easel in natural light. The best set up is scanning the work which I did but because the A4 printer can't record perfectly the A3 sketchbook I got a lot of light bleed which gave a shadow to one side.

So fiddle, fiddle, fiddle with whatever until you have had enough. Which I did and then as an experiment I put them into Procreate and used the eraser to clean up the first 2 images if you look closely you can see some tone around the figures. The last one because the fiddling got me an even tone I didn't need to clean up like the first 2 but you can see the ground is a tone darker than the other two. I think your advice given some time ago on how to take a photo of your work was good, if I was uploading my art more often I would invest in a better setup.

Bill thanks for that, four lights is the way to go for perfect results but it needa a lot of space for a permanent setup

Thanks Harry, the figure is like a siren.
thevaliantx, thanks
David, I should look into making something. Easels take up room too.
Mac, I wish, procrastination is my dominant habit now.
Joe, thanks you're welcome.

Hey Bill-

I hope youíre doing well. Itís really good to see your posts. I know Iím letting you down, but I donít have much criticism for these. In the 3rd drawing, The shape and tilt of the modelís pelvis is nice. Itís the one I like because I know it can be difficult to pull this off. Thereís a lot o subtle details that have to be right to make contrapposto-ish stances convincing. I guess if I have to point something out: where are their shadows? Just sayin.

Thanks for sharing these.
-Earl

Hey Earl thanks for the comments. These are rough drawings I'm not expecting to knock people out. I'm not concerned with the environmental aspects or clues mostly I want the action and proportions to be believable to shake the rust out. There are a lot of things to be critical about in these drawings and I reflect on them but if I overload myself with too many adjustments it defeats the purpose of working in a time restraint efficiently. The goal is to keep the habit of figure drawing motoring along while I work on my landscapes.
