Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

Susan, the background is lovely. Now stop fussing with the "landscape" part of the painting and do the butterfly!!!

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

Dawn thanks for your confidence in me

Kim and Paula, I just cracked up laughing when I saw your comments. I have a feeling that the butterfly might just be last to emerge in this scene, after all it has to have the nectar to feed on.

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

I'm with Dawn and Paula, get working on the bf, afterall you can't really finish the finesing of that back ground until you do. This is coming along so splendidly, I like the whole point of view on the garden, the inclusiveness of the bf/s world at large. For black on the creature I've used my darkest brown, with my darkest red over it finished with my darkest blue. It makes a glowing black. The veins afterall are filled with a fluid and so aren't a true black, and the markings are overlaid with a powdered scale that reflects light and also are not a true black.
Looking forward to seeing this one done.

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

This is going to be so beautiful, it looks GREAT already!! Love the bg, and the flower is stunning! Now, I second everybody - get on with the butterfly!

Oh, about the dust - I just use a piece of clean paper to put under my hand to protect areas I've worked on earlier - works like a charm!

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

This is coming along nicely. A note on black. I use black a lot in my work.
I usually do what Piper said I go over it with a dark color of choice, or I use
a dark color and go lightly over it with a black. I like a sharp black, however, not a dull one. I find also, if I tilt my easel forward just a tab the
excess pastel doesn't hit the paper below. I'm a messy painter though you
may not like that. Sometimes its all over my knees if I'm sitting. Which
usually I stand.

looking forward to the conclusion of this, I know it will be beautiful.

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

Chuckle……Ok ok ok……you win!!!

Merethe, good idea with the paper under the hand, as I have never thought of doing that. Do you work with your work reasonably flat so the pastel doesn’t fall behind the paper?

Leirrem, I was thinking about leaning the easel forward but do find it awkward. It is something I should persevere with, as in the long run it would be better for the most part with how I attack my paper.

It is great with everyone helping out with the darks (a huge thanks to you all) as it really has me thinking about the size of the butterfly, 45 centimeters across the wing span. I realized that I am going to have to work very hard to make sure the roundness in the dark areas doesn’t end up flat. TJ you are spot on with the reflective lights.

Before going any further with the painting today I decided to post a progress shot with the colours listed below that I have used for the butterfly. I am at the present time feeling my way to see if this works and for that reason there is still a lot of paper to cover. If this colour mix changes I will post that I have done so.

AS Flinders Red Violet N517
AS Flinders Blue Violet D520
WN Indanthrene Blue Tint 4
WN Winsor Orange Tint 3,4, & 5
WN Burnt Sienna Tint 4
AS Blue Grey T527
Scarlet Lake Tint 2
Unison BV7 (lightest shade of blue)

Re: Wanderer Butterfly WIP

Dawn a new pic just for you
Diane I am glad you are enjoying it.

I didn’t do a lot today on this piece as I am not feeling 100%. I had worked on the butterfly yesterday after my last posting. As the old brain is a bit foggy today I only added some colour to the remaining large flowers, as I didn’t dare touch the butterfly for fear of mucking up what I have already done. Hopefully I will have another update tomorrow.
