Re: Watercolor WIP - Portrait in stages

It's only 8 AM here.

Andy, I don't think I'm quite ready to tackle a portrait in watercolor, given that I've only done 2 watercolors this far. lol I just finished a graphite portrait of my daughter if you care to have a look. It's titled "Daydreaming" here... Maybe I will take one of those photos and have a go at it...

Looking forward to seeing more!

Re: Watercolor WIP - Portrait in stages

hi friends - and i hope you are still up or already up or whatever, at least watching!!! (*LOL*) - isnt it wonderful we chat and share experience in all parts of the world???

ive been doing some work on the eyes- darkening them - and on the eyebrows. to get this darkness i added some ivory black to my darkest skintones - but just for these single hairs. i also darkened the pupilla with some ivory black.

the other things ive done: worked some wet-in-wet on the rest of his body, but not yet on the arm in front. and ive worked some on his ears, mostly with rose madder genuine, but also a bit of transparent orange (im using schmincke-watercolors).

now ill go to the gym and when i return ill be starting working on Mark's hair, with my darkest skintones and a bit of ivory black, where i need deeper shadings and single hairs .....

i hope youll all have a wonderful time!!!!!!

*hugs*

Andy

Wow. I can't say much else, you've taken my breath away! I can only hope that someday I'll be able to do something even a fraction as good as this...

Re: Watercolor WIP - Portrait in stages

Tiffany,

you will be able to if you try hard enough ...... portraiture is something that can be practiced - any artinstructor will tell you that ..... and i am a living proof ... this is done from a photo i took, but i normally prefer lifedrawing ..... and one can learn everything, beleive me ......

im looking forward to your first portrait post!!!!

*hugs*

Wowwwww! I've seen realistic watercolors done before, but to be honest this is the first time I've seen realistic portraiture done with watercolors. It's beautiful!

Hi Andy,
Thanks for posting this. I am enthralled! You are turning Mark into a "legend" and his wife is going to adore it. I think this is what portraiture is truly about- finding the great parts of your subject and enhancing them- as you are doing here. I will be watching your thread- along with everyone else.

Re: Watercolor WIP - Portrait in stages

hey Nora,

i really hope so, too, that his wife will like the painting, and i am really happy, that you like it ..... yes, as you say, i always try to enhance the great parts of my subjects ...... watercolors is a very difficult medium, but i love them so much for their transparency, most of all when it comes to painting skin .... i am sorry that there are not many artists doing watercolor portraits, there are some very good ones ive seen on the net, but not really many. i think oils is still the king (i am just learning how to use oils and acrylics), but i will always stick to watercolors as my favorites!!!

thanks for watching and your nice comments!!!

*hugs*
