Yes. about 30 years ago I would buy bags of messy scraps from a knitting factory outlet to use to knit dolls. What was nice about them was that the yarn was very fine, lace weight, in all sorts of colours and yarn types. I could get a bread bag full for a $1. Of course sometimes I would have to spend an hour or more untangling it......

Here's a link to the doll pattern Jen, Ruth added a circular cardboard inner base to make them more stable.
