Hi CP masters.
I’m finding it hard to be spontaneous when taking my pencils out of their lovely flat boxes.
Do any of you just keep them in a cylindrical holder, tumbler, jar, etc.
they look so pretty in the box……but.Derek

The inner box with flap slides out when unsnapped from the outer sleeve. Holds lots of pencils for, like 0.99 US cents, IIRC.

October 21, 2018 at 7:14 pm #714771Thanks guys, but my problem is taking them out quickly to use. I’ve gone ahead and put them all in mason jars….love it. I only work in the studio and have 3 full sets of pencils. In the boxes, they took up a lot of room on the art table. Large footprint.

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1431363October 22, 2018 at 10:28 pm #714784Mason jars. A lot of them. Colour families, a couple more for portrait sets, what have you. A couple for warm grey, a couple more for cool. A few more more for my bulk regular colors that I buy by the dozen. Then a few for those colors I really never use. Many, many Mason jars. And the original metal tins for the really short ones. And a big shelf over my drawing table to hold them all. Wanted one of those fancy wooden drawer cases, but it aint happening.
October 23, 2018 at 12:31 pm #714773Good stuff Anthony. I got a case of the jars on sale last week for $8.

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1431363October 24, 2018 at 5:11 am #714776I have a small area in our lounge room for my drawing space. I have hundreds of pencils, that I’ve built up over the years.
I use a set of 10 tier storage drawers. I organize my pencils by color families. In the top drawers are one of every color I have (again in color families) and the middle drawers are all extra colors/pencils I have. I also have my watercolor paints etc in the last couple of drawers. It is easily accessible and holds a lot for my very limited space.

I had the same trouble and did just what you did…used all my old, tall mason jars and sorted by color. It helps me see the shorties, and I like the look. It’s sort of old school art class! My challenge now is to set up a space for working. I have been drawing from my easy chair and that’s not working. I have an old architect’s desk that is disassembled. I need to get that thing put together, put a light on it and bingo.
Thanks for the inspiration…I think I’ll do just that!

October 24, 2018 at 2:24 pm #714770Kirsten, Hi.
I’ve been doing so much reading on how sitting for long periods is bad for health, I now stand at a tall drafting table, about waist height. It is tilted about 15 degrees and I love it. When my feet get tired I have a tall stool at just the right height.

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1431363October 25, 2018 at 2:04 am #714783I’m enjoying this thread – I’m always fascinated by different set-ups and storage choices. I think both are definitely a case of different strokes for different folks.
I tried putting my pencils in jars but it didn’t suit me at all – I found it took much longer to select the colour I wanted each time, and it was tricky trying to grab a pencil from the middle of the jar, or to grab a short pencil without getting stabbed by the longer ones!
I much prefer mine in a 6-drawer unit on my desktop, all laid flat, so I can see the barrels and the colour names and therefore make a super-quick selection without dealing with the pointed ends. I can fit a total of around 220-230 pencils in the unit. (This is an old picture, the drawers are all choc-full of pencils now!)
Sonia – that’s a really nice tidy set-up you have there. I try to tidy mine regularly but within minutes of me sitting down it’s always a mess again!
October 25, 2018 at 3:22 pm #714767Storing colored pencils, why can’t all dilemmas be so much fun to resolve?
Like Claudia and Sonia, I prefer a drawer system for pencils and other supplies. My pencils are organized in the small drawers on the upper left, each drawer affixed with a colored round label. The other drawers are for my paper cutting/sculpting supplies: blades, adhesives and sheets of paper 12″ x 12″ or less.
Great thread, hope to see more layouts.

November 1, 2018 at 9:50 am #714769Lots of great ideas here! Keep sharing! Most of my time is spent painting. My colored pencils are my on-the-go art supply, so mine are kept in a pencil roll I made. Easy enough to use, but I don’t have nearly the pencil collection that some of you do!! Haha!
