I know that Quin Gold PO 49 watercolor paint is not being produced anymore. I do have some PO49 pigment. Not much, a few ounces. How to make a paint out of that is my question. What supplies would I need? I am not going to attempt it until I have a process that I understand and someone has recommended.
It’s not an essential, but I do use it a lot and have a couple extra tubes stashed away. Being kind of a diy person it sounds like a fun project.October 15, 2018 at 7:05 pm #712207let me give you my address, the first step is to send it to me ,,,then I’ll tell you the rest,,, I still have one tube of the original ,,,but I dont want to use it,,,I wasnt involved much in the years that it was known to be running low , I woulda stocked up,,, I’m sorta a hoarder (of supplies ,,, not junk)

At least twice a year, paint something better than you ever painted before.October 15, 2018 at 7:37 pm #712201Kaylen has a good point. I find that no pigment is indispensable, and more so if it is in short supply. If he pays premium price, just go ahead and get his address…….!!! (really, I mean it! Just hope he’s not reading this!)
But, if you don’t want to heed my advice, here’s some more advice (on how to make watercolors) https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1422368
(I have posted more, but you’ll have to search)October 15, 2018 at 8:08 pm #712208Oldey,, there are several youtube videos on making watercolors

At least twice a year, paint something better than you ever painted before.October 15, 2018 at 8:49 pm #712225I’ve been looking into making my own paints for a while – this is what i know so far:
You need a glass muller and a sheet of glass for “milling” the paint mixture thoroughly (spreading the paint mix in a thin film to make sure pigment particles get coated in vehicle properly). Gum arabic, glycerine and ox gall at the very least as ingredients. Ox gall is particularly important since you’re mixing a small particle stainer. The pigment to vehicle ratio for small particle pigments (like quinacridones) is 20% – 1 part pigment to 4 parts vehicle. To get more specific proportions of gum arabic/glycerine + other suff have a look here (scroll down):https://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt1.html
Here is a link for a muller (it’s quite an investment but there’s no other way to mix):
It’s recommended use a dust mask when handling the dry pigment in the open.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Sebastian.

No it’s not an essential. I just think it would be fun to learn the process so any pointers are appreciated!

At least twice a year, paint something better than you ever painted before.October 15, 2018 at 9:43 pm #712228You can try to mill some common pigments(for example Prussian blue or earths) first~! You can gain some experience from these cheaper materials before the milling of valuable PO49 paint.

No you don’t. Use some alcohol as a wetting agent, and a spatula will work just fine.

October 16, 2018 at 1:52 pm #712204If you bought a pigment dispersion from Guerra Paint, all you need to add is a couple drops of gum arabic solution after you put a few drops of the pigment dispersion in your palette. It will stick to your paper just fine. I have done this for a long time. I haven’t bothered with the dry pigments.
