        Hey Gang,

Been in paint outs the last few weeks, so just getting caught back up on things. I had a great week in Central Florida, selling six (woo hoo!) so I was a happy camper. Then in St Augustine for a paint out a few days last week. I will try and post some of those when I get the paintings back. Today I met up with artist Phil Sandusky, Robert Leedy and Paul Ladnier at Singleton’s Seafood Shack in Mayport and painted at the edge of the St Johns River behind the restaurant. Here is my effort. 8×10″ oil on linen panel.

Thanks for looking. Comments & Crits welcomed.

Beautiful painting Randy – the treatment of the water and reflections is outstanding – gorgeous painting!

Beautifully painted Randy! The shadows are executed perfectly and love the loose brushwork that makes the painting come alive.

Wonderful. I had to think who this reminds me of, and finally realized I believe it is Emil Gruppe(sp).

Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

You have great skill, talent and dedication. It shows. This is a wonderful juicy painting, so well stated with a sure hand.

A truly lovely painting which serves as a memory of what sounds like a truly lovely day! You have reduced the detail in that boat to a minimum, but your wonderful brush strokes means it is still all there. I get a real sense of it bobbing gently in the water in that hazy sunlight. I love the striking green of the sails and the flashes of red/orange. Excellent!

I love those spontaneous brushstrokes, suggested detail & touches of pure color which carry the eye around – Nicely Painted Randy !

It’s always a treat to see your plein air work, Randy and this one is gorgeous! I like how the warm, peach-colored sky makes the white of the boat stand out. Congrats on all the well-deserved sales too!

                                            Thank you, Gary! :)

Thank you, Bizzibee! I don’t know what it is, perhaps it’s because I live close to the water, or because I know this is a dying profession (at least in this area), but as a landlubber, I love painting shrimp/fishing boats. They are so unique in the way they look. They have so much character, and the people who own them are every bit as much characters as their boats. Just so you, know the greens and the tall dark shapes toward the stern of the boat are nets. When not in use, they hoist them up on a boom and let them hang down. The nets are huge, so they almost look like sails. :)

                                            Thank you, Michael :)

Thank you, Donna! It’s been pretty good this year sales-wise! I hope it keeps up!! :)

                                            Thank you Mikael! :)

Thanks for clarifying that Randy. The fish quay near me is probably a whole lot more commercial an affair, but it is an amazingly vibrant place and the fish and chips are to die for! It catches the most prawns in the whole of England, I believe. The nets on the trawlers are on drums I think, and I don’t imagine they are as pretty as the boats you paint, but a lot of people do paint the scene. I might try it one day! 😃

Thanks, Lucy! I like shrimp a po’boy too, but give me some grilled or blackened shrimp on a skewer with a side of remoulade sauce for dipping and I’m lovin’ it!! Don’t forget the ice cold beer to wash it down with! :)

You’re welcome, Bizzibee. I like painting the bigger more commercial boats too. I love a good plate of fish and chips with malt vinegar. But it has to be the real deal, like what you’re probably used to, with the light and flaky batter, or otherwise it’s just another batch of fried fish. Not many places in the states know how to fix it right.

The shrimp boats in the southeast have been in a sign of the fishing industry for as long as I can remember. Mayport, where I painted this boat, used to be a commercial fishing village where the one street in was lined with restaurants and the docks were lined with shrimp boats out back. Now there are only two restaurants left, and most of it is either parking for the coast guard, or a marina for a casino cruise boat. And there are plans to put a major cruise ship terminal there, which the locals are fighting tooth and nail. It still has some of the old fishing village charm but it’s disappearing fast. As are most of the independent fishermen. Hard to compete against corporate interests and huge commercial fleets.

                                                    Randy
