Brush Sizes

How do brush size numbers relate to inches? For instance, how wide is a #6, etc?
Thanks,
Sam

PS: The answer likely already exists in this forum so my apologies.

Re: Brush Sizes

Sadly, they don't. There is no standard for brush sizes, so each manufacturer has a different interpretation.

The Dick Blick web site lists brush dimensions along with the size number, so that might help you.

Re: Brush Sizes

Some of the flats will actually give sizes in inches/or parts of - e.g. 1/4", 1/2", 1" etc but the rounds and filberts are just numbered and, as Cliff says above, not standardised.

Sam, I've sent you a private message.

Re: Brush Sizes

Brush numbers are BY FAR the least accurate way to determine size. Short of seeing the brush in person, you cannot determine size based on number. The numbers vary greatly from brand to brand so the numbers are pretty much worthless.

I talk about it a bit more in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYfhVFFUmHc
