My first portrait (finished!!!)

Aaand it's done. I've been fiddling with the shading on the younger boy's face all day - in the ref photo he has a lot of shading, I've gone for less - I hope it's not too ghost like!!! It looked strange when i copied the photo, he had panda face!!!

I think I'll go with the darker frame - the other frame is too close in colour to the drawing

Any critiques, things I could have done better?

Dan

Thumbs up Re: My first portrait! (WIP)

Wow,wow, wow....I'm fairly new to this site (and to CP) and have never posted before, but I had to comment on this stunning portrait. Your friend will cherish and treasure your work always. My husband still has a picture his Mom's friend drew when he was very little...so special. For what it's worth, I like the simplicity of the bottom frame a bit better. And I do wish the younger boy had a darker mop in real life for you ha, I think it must have been so hard to keep him light...fabulous job, be very proud!

This is so beautiful as is. I can't suggest a colour for the background. I feel nervous just thinking about a background and perhaps ruining what you have achieved. Can you try out different colours in a computer programme? Or photocopy the original and test a couple of backgrounds on those.

Re: My first portrait! (WIP)

Thankyou, that's kind :-) I'm pretty happy with it! She'll like it, I hope!! I ended up going with a different frame, because the suppliers had run out of both!! I left the background as is in the end, it gave it a softness that I really liked.

What do you think?

Very impressive work. During the updates, I was looking at some tonal quality problems but you have worked those out wonderfully. This portrait is definitely inspiring me to try another one myself in color. Great work!

Re: My first portrait! (WIP)

I hope this is your first of many portraits. This is fabulous. The texture of that tousled hair is wonderful. The only thing I might have been tempted to do is to push, just a bit, one of the darker shadows on the taller child. Perhaps in the hood or behind the collar, as the dark between the children pulls the eye. But I don't think it is essential. The eye will be drawn to that amazing hair. This is one to be proud of!

Re: My first portrait! (WIP)

Thankyou! I'm going to her house for dinner on Monday, so she'll get it then! Can't wait :-)

I can see the area I needed to darken - the dark at the base of the hair is too light! Thankyou for that, I'd missed it. I could see something was slightly off but couldn't tell what! I think I'll go back to drawing wildlife for a bit before doing my next portrait, I've already had 2 people who have seen this asking me for one!! 😊
