Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Good morning everyone. I am sitting here quietly drinking my coffee and loving it all quiet with just myself and the pups. Hubby always sleeps late so this is my time.

My sister is loving it at the sr Village. Before she left I had applied for and gotten an electric wheelchair for her. She has taken herself to the bank, the grocery store and down by the river to watch the wildlife and fishermen and women. She said she feels so free to come and go as she pleases. I am very happy for her. While living her she could only go if she asked someone to take her and my terrain wasn't suitable for her to walk , much less use and electric wheelchair. Florida is flat and this Village has paved pathways to go anywhere there. She is making friends and outside just enjoying life!

My hubby is still not well but he is not as sick as he was. They have changed almost all of his meds so hes back to living as we did before he started the shaking. His hands are still shaking but he can deal with that much better than his entire body shaking! In fact, today we are having a Chili Cookoff at the house and our Karaoke crew over singing and eating good food.. I made white chili as I know that most of the chilis will be the typical red chili. I of course had to taste it as I cooked it and it is really pretty yummy! I am just really happy that he is back to running Karaoke and singing again.

My mother is packing and has resigned herself to going there. She still can't believe I am throwing her out.I am NOT throwing her out. I found a beautiful and affordable place and I think she will love it there too. Lots of activities going on. She is a very active 85 year old so I feel she will be happier than she is here. I guess we will soon find out. I'm just waiting on the call that her apartment is ready! They have remodeled the kitchen and painted and now just waiting on them to clean it up . We think it will be moving day a week from today! YAY!!!

I haven't worked on any additional cards but I have seen names here on these posts that just might show up in someones mailbox! Its a really fun project and I am loving it! Looking forward to seeing all of the interpretations! Hope you all had a good Valentines day and are staying warm and toasty!

Cindy so glad for your sister. How wonderful! You must be relieved.
I think your mom will surprise HERSELF, and like this new place too. I know you have been the bad guy for awhile. It takes strength to do that, and move forward despite all that to find a good solution for everyone.

I was hoping the proper medication would relieve some of the shaking for your hubby. That is great news, especially if he can get back to some of his favourite activities. Which by the way, your place sounds like a lot of fun! 🙂
I have never heard of white chilli. Now I am going to look it up.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Christine, She is one that I had in mind. I heard or read about her a year or two ago. If I remember correctly I read about one of her paintings and the meaning went a lot deeper than just the picture. I will have to go and research it again as I wouldnít want to give out false info on it but she certainly is worthy of copying.

Cindy Iím happy that things are looking up for you and your family seems to be well taken care of. It is difficult to make decisions for other peopleís lives. My dad is 90 but my brother lives with him. Iím not sure that he is the best care giver but at least itís someone there. I worry about my dad but I canít be over there all the time as my husband expects me to be here most of the time. I guess you do what you think is best at the moment. But iím Happy for you and iíve Never heard of white chili interesting.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

OK so we had a definite forecast of snow all day today. I'm sitting here looking at sunshine and not a cloud in sight. Awhile back we had a forecast of nice weather and what we got was 48 hours of non-stop rain. Now the forecast for snow is moved to Wednesday.

I've been trying to do some research but I'm getting kind of intimidated. I think I'm going to have to go to painting just a portion of a painting a master has done.

Are we supposed to paint just works that were done in watercolor or does any medium count? I've seen some watercolors that are impossible to tell from oils. The old masters were so good!

One of my problems is that I don't know who the old masters were except for Michelangelo. I'm very educationally challenged where art is concerned. This is expanding my knowledge and it's interesting. My daughter has given me a couple of big fat college art textbooks and I was looking at those last night. I may find something in one of those to paint.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Any medium Ellen and you donít need to do the technically hardest painters/ styles. Some styles are easier because they were pushing the boundaries of what art can be, instead of just rehashing the very technically difficult traditional style works. If we had been allowed to go past 1923 you would be able to do much ďsimplerĒ styles like Mark Rothko for example. You can see that traditional tight styles were slowly becoming looser and artists were play with breaking down the idea of what is art and the idea of playing with the elements of painting even before 1923 though. Those would be the kind of artworks to look to. After that, artists really pushed it further. Eventually, leading to just the qualities of paint itself. Or calling a urinal art. They were challenging the question of ďwhat is art?Ē.
Here is Mark Rothko. This style is called Colour Field from the 1940s and 1950s.

I will send you some links for some more modern painters that are before 1923.😉

Also you can look at lesser known art from museums. The artistís names are not well known to most of us but if they are in the museum I figure they deserve recognition for their work. I have discovered many works and artists this way. I just look at a time period or click on an art movement and check the dates are from before 1923.🙂

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Thank you Christine! What I've been doing is looking up art before 1923. I see a lot of artists who died in 1923. I figure if they died in 1923 then they must have done their art work before that. I'm learning a lot but haven't decided on exactly what I'm going to do yet.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Ellen, it doesn't have to be a "master" it can be any painting/sculpture/drawing/window/glasswork/vase etc done before 1923. There are plenty of simple works of art. You can choose any style, medium or genre or even draw a sculpture or a glass window or even say a Grecian vase. You can use any medium you want. You don't have to paint it in the same medium as the original. For instance I'm using acrylic instead of oil.

If you check out the Google Art Project collections (click this link) you can scan through the collections from various museums. This link has various artists.

Most of all, just enjoy yourself, do a drawing or a painting or use colored pencils or collage, whatever you'd like is fine.

Cindy, that sounds so wonderful for your sister, glad she's enjoying it.

I hope your Mom enjoys it once she's in there. I wish my Mom would go do that, she would be so much better off.

Glad your hubby is doing better. My hands shake at times (nerve damage from an accident and Rheumatism). Lately I can't open anything so I got this little robot thing that opens jars. It's really loud but it works. My dogs are fascinated by it.

Christine, that artist is amazing. I didn't learn about many females either in art history!

Floblue, looks like we have more snow coming! We drove down to Peoria today, it was a nice drive, chilly but the sun was out. I stopped at Blicks in Galesburg on the way back. I love that place.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

I stayed in all day again. Itís been almost a month since iíve gotten out for more than an hour. With this weather itís very easy not to go out. I started two cards today both female artists. It looks like (to me at least) they were influenced by Gauguin. One is an island girl similar in style and color to one of his. I hope someone likes nudes. Not pornagraphic more in the style of Gauguin. If that type of nudity offends anyone let me know so I donít send that one to you. it is in oil but needs to dry a bit before I can finish it.
Ellen I am sure you will find something that suits you to paint. By painting the masters you get to really see how they used color and form. You will be surprised at how much it improves your work.
Virginia I donít think Iíve ever been to Galesburg. I will have to go there when the weather breaks. Hope it is soon. Iím getting tired of all this snow and ice.

[quote=PaintBoss]I stumbled onto a woman artist I had never heard of before.

Anyone else read "The Passion of Artemisia?" a book about a post renaissance painter who "ghost" painted her father's works and married an artist that she outshone. She was exploited and... I won't give the plot away but it was a powerful portrait of life for a woman artist of that time period.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

I will have to look into that. Never heard of that. Only that modern ďBig EyesĒ painter they made the movie about.
We were just told in art history lessons that women only painted if they were from affluent homes where young ladies would be expected to learn piano, needlepoint,or paint. Female artists were not allowed in art schools because of the sense of propriety and nudity for life drawing. Also they would be unmarried and it would be seen as inappropriate, especially to their sensibilities, and surrounded by men, or married, with family/ household duties that should keep them home. Always wondered how much talent was out there that we never found out about. So much. It was feared as a bohemian lifestyle for a proper lady.

Re: Project Discussion: Painting the Masters ATC Trade

Yes I read some of her story it not the whole book. It seems a lot of women werenít given credit for their work. I saw the movie about the ďbig eyesĒ painter. I googled femal painters before 1923 and a huge list populated. I picked two off the list and started. Iím really liking this exchange so far.
