WIP - Tigers, first test on black paper

I recently acquired some sheets of black Stonehenge paper - and have been terrified of them ever since. Keeping my white white and my blacks black has always been my biggest issue with coloured pencils. I wanted to see if a black background would make this easier, but was also very aware of the fact that it's much harder to keep your colours saturated and bright than it is on white paper. A completely different approach would be needed.

After a huge drawing stump, I figured I'd just try and not care if it ended up being a disaster, Jury's still out on that, but I'm positively hopeful so far. I don't hate it yet, which is always a plus with me. Yes, this paper gives one hell of a glare (hence the weird angles and fairly bad pictures) and I definitely had to change my way of laying down my layers and colours, but my colours are still lively and I love the contrast this paper allows for.

Biggest downside so far is how I seem to need daylight to be able to properly judge my values and colours, so no more drawing till tomorrow morning for me.

Well done for attempting something you find difficult. I’m looking forward to seeing your progress.

What brand of pencils are you using - something fairly soft?

Looking good so far. That size is quite an undertaking!

Re: WIP - Tigers, first test on black paper

Thank you all! I gotta say I'm loving working on this scale, great for all those fine details.

Schuee, I use a mix of Luminance and Polychromos, with the odd Coloursoft thrown in. The paper is very soft and absorbent, so the Luminance pencils almost feel like pastel.

Some progress today, some of it in unnatural light so very difficult to take a good picture. Will update again before I start working on it tomorrow.

Loving your progress, how are you finding the whites? I found the polychromus just disappeared into that black stonehenge and was constantly re-applying. Maybe other brands of white are better. Yours seem to be stunningly white which is lovely.
