Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Oh good thinking Marcia. I will be sure to post links to the new ones from here, like one long look at my sketchbooks over time. I have 28 pages left in this one, then I get to start on using each new sketchbook for specific subjects, to keep them more organized.

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Delo, I am enjoying catching up on your sketches! Your warm-up sketches are really well done. Glad you were able to try some of the Stillman & Birn papers. That makes it much easier to pick the sketchbook you want.

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Decided I needed some work on portraiture, sadly I did not get the proportions of the face correct, the nose is a bit too short and thus the whole head is a bit off. From this reference photo in the RIL. The photo shows the pencils I used for the one, basically a Zorn palette plus a blue and a green. Sadly the paper does not hold the color very well so it is already starting to come off on the back of the previous page. Ah well, was good practice anyhow, but really reinforced why I am looking forward to a new sketchbook, this took a long time compared to a similar work I did recently on a sample sheet of S&B paper (and the resulting quality of this feels less good to me than that one).

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Thanks Maria, it was nice and therapeutic to do.

It is too bad the paper tooth would not let me get full color depth in some areas. There are supposed to be deeper shadows on the cheeks to make them recede and make her face more slender, but just cannot get the paper to accept anymore without it getting blotchy or the paper curling too much. The perils of working in a cheap sketchbook though, comes with the territory. Still though, learned a great deal about the limitations of the surface, and was surprised that I managed to produce something of this degree of rendering, usually stopped at just light color layers.

Delo, wonderful work on the portrait, I loved how you accentuated the feel of major forms, it looks realistic yet also has a distinct style.

Well done even if the paper wasn't what you wanted. Can't wait to see what you do with the Stillman & Birn.

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

S&B are lovely sketchbooks for a whole range of materials

I like coloured pencils on sanded paper, so rich and the colours can be overlaid cleanly

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Otherworlder: Thanks, I am definitely trying to actively stylize things very subtly.

Joan: I find getting a similar finish on any surface is just a matter of time, but some surfaces and papers make it faster and easier by far. Well at least any surface which color will stick to, some things I cannot get the color to stay put on. Looking forward to the S&B sketchbook myself, they are well worth the money spent in my opinion (at least when one wants a paper that allows for high levels of finish).

Vivien: I like colored pencil on sanded surfaces as well, in fact my favorite surface is a home made panel with a gritty absorbent ground. Allows me to do a lot of layering and even work the colored pencil into a couch of oil like I do when oil painting. This makes the pencil slide easier and blending to be more thorough, feels similar to oil painting, and treatment of the colored pencil can use the same kind of approach. Over painting on top of the block in done in a couch is easy due to the tooth of the surface, and the color itself is vibrant. Unfortunately cannot use many of these techniques in regular sketchbooks, but maybe on one of the thicker papers with a coat of clear acrylic gesso.

Re: Delo's Random Sketchbook

Helen, thanks so much, been trying to utilize more design in my work lately in general. Not always very successfully, and not everything I do in my sketchbooks is centered solely on that subject of study.

Mixed media on 400 Series Sketchbook paper by Strathmore, 8.5 X 5 Inches

Oh I forgot, meant to post this the other day, hadn't realized I had not. It is from this reference, though I took extreme liberties with the composition, colors, and invented a lot of interesting stuff for it. This was one of the most fun pieces I have ever worked on, and I will likely utilize it as reference for a more finished painting in the not so distant future because of how much I enjoyed doing it. I think there were some more crops from the photo that I could use as well, it is an interesting photo for sure.
