new abstract landscape

A new abstract landscape for this week. The size is 40 x 40 cm oil on canvas. Not sure what this represents but I was doing some sketching by the coast and the harbour area, could be this came into the work unconsciously! I am enjoying working this way with the palette knife, there is very thick paint in the sky area! Very different sky to my old stormy paintings! Thanks for looking Caroline

Re: new abstract landscape

Indeed a beautiful abstract where I personally interpret the mass of shapes as boats. Whether intentional or not the end result works terrific, Caroline - Well Done !

Re: new abstract landscape

I also see boats lined up. I like the idea of giving just enough hints to let the viewer complete the picture. Gary

Re: new abstract landscape

For me, abstracts are funny things. They make the viewer do the work, but that interaction is part of fun and, ulitmately, their reward. I do see boats, but possibly only because you mentioned the harbour. I also see it as a close up of the earth and reeds/grasses. Whatever it is, it is excellent! That teal and purple is stunning.

Re: new abstract landscape

I definitely see boats and masts (I'm not a boat/ship person and know next to nothing about them, but I think that masts is a boat term?) - that intense purple pulls me right in - I am really loving your abstracts, they are special

Re: new abstract landscape

It's boats for me too, Caroline, and I'm absolutely fascinated by how little it takes to give that impression! It looks like they are headed out for the day under a wide-open sky.

Re: new abstract landscape

OH yes, boats it is - the arrangement of the shapes along with their color draws the viewer right into the "guts" of the painting. The masts act as pointers to that nicely textured sky - A BRILLIANT PIECE OF ABSTRACT FINE ART!

The little spot of red says " Hey, start looking here first!"

Re: new abstract landscape

Very nice. I initially saw bare trees/scrub in an autumn-winter landscape, but if I look for boats instead, then I can see boats! That's one of the things I like about abstract work.

Re: new abstract landscape

A big thank you to you all for your very insightful and lovely comments, they are all appreciated and helpful too. I wonder if I had not mentioned sketching by the harbour you might have seen something different!

Thank you again to Michael, Gary, Bizzi, Ann, Donna, Heather, Richard (master of the knife painting!), and Claudia!

Re: new abstract landscape

I also read it as boats in a harbour before reading your words. Like the left to right swipe movement. Very nice.

Hi Arnie that is good you saw boats before reading my words! Without being aware of it I was still painting my beloved coastal areas! Many thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

Your colors and the placement of them catch my eye. This is a very pleasing piece.

Beautiful brushwork and the placement of color patches is perfect. Love the purple against the dark turquoise.

Great design Caroline! I like the warms and cools- great variations in application and edge too.
