Re: Bible Book Cover W.I.P.

This is a close-up view of the one that I made for my wife. It shows the depth of the depression when the tools are used to compress the leather leaving the detailed objects standing out. There is an example of a designed tip overlaid with this particular design and the stamping tool is like a pencil that has a blunt end with a variety of designs...(three of which I purchased for this piece and decided not to use). The main reason being that most of the work is all on the bottom and the top half of the work is just sky which I'll paint and leave without stamping.

This has been worked over with the knife and the burnishing tool. At this stage the leather has to be soaked on both sides.

Re: Bible Book Cover W.I.P.

When I'm not working on it, I keep it wet with a wet towel on both sides to keep it ready to work when I have opportunity. Sometimes letting it dry out and then re-wetting will make peculiar surface changes in the raw leather...mostly colour changes.

Re: Bible Book Cover W.I.P.

This is as bit more work progressing to the left of the piece as I use the burnishing tool.

This is most of the burnishing finished. A few small spots that have to be worked over some more.

Re: Bible Book Cover W.I.P.

You can see on the right hand side the colour change as it was the first area worked on and as I move to the left the right side is drying out while I'm still keeping the left side wet until the burnishing is finished as I move across the leather.

Notice the leather drying out on the right hand side where I haven't been working for a day or two.

Ready to start the painting. This will be with acrylics and then a couple of coatings of a leather protective clear that will go over the whole outside of the case.
