G, the most prominent thing that strikes me is the fact that all of your elements are at the same height, which would make it very difficult to establish depth. You may want to lower the mountains to have them appear at a distance. Also your mountain on the left 'kisses' the left edge of the cabin. Put it behind the cabin a bit more or move it slightly away. Either would work. I realize that this is just a study so i'll leave you with that. Love the overall concept & it should make a nice painting.
Love your name btw
Cheryl

thanks Cheryl!!
this is exactly the input i was looking for. sometimes it helps to have someone else's perspective. this was just a quick sketch. nothing was set in stone. i'll definatly take some of your suggestions. especially with the mountains.
a lot of my problem was i didn't have a very good selection of markers when i did the sketch so it was hard to show any real depth or shadows.
my brushes are in bad shape so i'm seriously thinking of doing this one in oil pastels. if done well, they almost give the effect of looking at a painting, and their a lot cheaper!
thanks again. i'll try to keep the board updated with my progress. it's kind of on the back burner as far as ideas go but i'll try to get some good work in on it this weekend.

thanks,
kate

p.s. you like giambologna?? thats great. i havn't been able to even find anyone who knows who he is!

Giambologna,

Welcome to WC!

The way you used the markers in your sketch gives this piece a very graphic and illustrator feel. If you will be doing the final maintaining some of this technique, I'd recommend using acrylics. Then if you will be doing a more painterly approach, the oil pastels would bring more of a soft-edged depth the piece (not that you can't also achieve the same using acrylics.)

Cheryl's observation about the heights being equal was good. In addition, the fact that the building has a peak just like the mountain to the left gives a pointed feel to the piece. Perhaps emulating the mountains on the right in your mountain on the left as well as dropping it down a bit for depth.

The tree has a very nice shape.

On the fencing, if you will be leaving both sides of the fence in, just adjust the shapes so they work with the painting, directing your eye more up and to the house.

Please let us see how you continue with this one.

Diane
