I want to paint using a stencil on a bag I have. It’s made form 900D nylon, similar to some of the cordura materials out there. Since it’s a bag it’s probably coated somehow too, and from my research, most paints do not stick well to this type of fabric.

I’ve also read that nylon fabrics should be washed first, to get the stretching phase out of the way. Is this correct? This is a new bag.

What paint should I use? I want it to stick pretty much permanently, and I doubt the bag will be washed once it’s on there, I typically don’t wash my bags.

        Edit:

Just been googling and came up with a possible alternative.

Buy some nylon fabric, cut out the design I want, and ‘glue’ it onto the bag using seam sealer. The seam sealer I already have is pretty heavy duty, it’s made for fixing wet suits. Do you think this would work?

I would try using acrylic paint…I’ve had good success with artist’s acrylics right out of the tube.

if I remember right, our satin jackets were 100% nylon…they worked great…I painted stretchy pants that also worked great…I used textile inks..Aqua flow paints. Some nylon will melt…and textile ink will need heat set…now spandex won’t hold paint, it’ll wash right out, no matter what. But if spandex has 1% cotton in it, it will work great…a nylon bag, I would say will probably work fine, as long as it’s on the fabric side and not on the plastic feel/look” side…now mind you, I retired in ’08, so there might be new materials out there…I painted commercially for 30 yrs…

I have painted on nylon with markers and paints from Artistro https://artistro.com/ I usually use it on a variety of surfaces and it works. But if the your fabric is really like Cordura, then perhaps the paint may behave differently. As far as I know, Cordura really have a water repellent finish, so you’d better find out if your fabric has one. Most nylon items have a polyurethane coating on the INSIDE. But Cordura has both water repellent and PU, according to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordura
Also, if you paint on fabric you always should to be very careful when you wash it. I hope this could useful to someone

I'm a painter currently living in Los Angeles. My work focuses on technique in application and dynamic color stories, usually with a focus on organic subjects such as animals or body parts.
