        hi Everyone

thought I would ask all the fabulous Scratchboard artists a question regarding color pencil on clayboard

I am almost done with my ocelot and thought for my next project I would attempt using clayboard for my next project….since I am still very much a novice with using both the scratchboard and clayboard medium I was wondering how well does color pencil take to clayboard does it still give the same vibrant color as if I was drawing on Bristol or Illustration board.

thanks for any advice you can give me

        Sheryl ;-)

the only color pencils I’ve successfully used on clayboard are the inktense pencils. There is no grit on clayboard and layering colored pencils is nearly impossible. I generally use ink or fluid acrylics to block in colors/forms and save the pencils for details. There are a few others on this forum that have used pencils more than me who could probably make some suggestions.

I LOVE color pencil on claybord. It is a bit more difficult than inks but I think it’s worth it. It helps to lightly sand the board with a fine grit before you start. that gives it some tooth. It also helps to crosshatch because the previously drawn lines also give it tooth. I try to keep my pencils as sharp as possible. I am not sure why that helps, but it does. Here are some samples of my pencil work on claybord.

Clearly Diana is the master of all things scratch. I am now experimenting with color pencil and pastel and really like the experience.

The Elk is coloured pencil while the BG is acrylic on this one. I love how coloured pencil works on these boards.

These are fantastic!!! What brand of colored pencil if you don’t mind me asking? I want to try clayboard but the prices of the boards are steep and it will have to work. I usually use a Bristol paper without tooth anyway and Prismas, FC’s some Inktense and others….
