Lion WIP

I started working on a lion and will be posting my progress as I go.

All suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated.

The Reference Photo was obtained from Wet Canvas, Reference Image Library, Uploaded by the user Crias.

The type of paper is Stonehenge.

The dimensions are 7.5 X 10

I have included the line drawing and a close up on the area worked on so far.

Re: Lion WIP

You are off to a good start. You have done a good job giving the eye depth and shine. It would also be helpful to post the reference you are using. You may have to resize it though.

I am looking forward to seeing this progress.

Re: Lion WIP

Ah there you are... was waiting for your next work to show up. The line drawing looks good and the eye is beautifully done, i don't think you bite off more then you can chew. You will do just fine. Curious to see what you do next, keep us posted.

A lot of intensity in that beady little eye. Looking forward to your next update.

Re: Lion WIP

Anne Thank you! I will be including the reference photo in my next update. The reference photo and my rendition of it will not be exact. For example I didnít like the eyes in the reference photo, too dull. Another point is that I am a new to this and I have problems with precision. Thatís why the feedback I receive is so important to me, every comment I receive spurs me on to continue and gives me valuable pointers for the piece Iím working on and to incorporate in my next piece.

Morgana You found me, great! Took me a while to find a photo that I could use. This one is ok, but itís difficult to make out the direction of fur in some places and the left eye does not have any highlights. Thank you for your continued support!

Rob, Thank you for your feedback! I think heís an angry lion. Bad day at the office! The colors are a little off in the scan but in my next post I will be adjusting the colors to match a little better.

Re: Lion WIP

Here is my update for today. I've adjusted the scanner it is closer to my picture. The paper looks grey now, it is white but the colors look more precise. This piece will take a while. I'm taking my time. When I feel myself getting frustrated or losing my concentration I call it a day.

I'm including the reference photo. Sorry the pictures are not showing up I will check back later to see if it is fixed.

Re: Lion WIP

The eye has more intensity, more punch, and is more alive in your piece than in your reference. Always a good sign. Glad to hear you're taking it slow with this. If you think you're biting off more than you can chew then it's going to be a learning experience and worth every minute.

And now my unsolicitated 2 cents: don't include the fly. It does nothing for the image...so shoo, fly, shoo!

Still watching. -Rob

Re: Lion WIP

It's coming along beautifully. Don't worry about the time it takes. Work at a speed that is comfortable for you.

Also remember that you are the artist and you can change things that you think will make it better. Think of the reference as a starting point. Your finished painting doesn't have to be an exact duplicate of the original.
