"Ace of Spades" watercolor 2.5"x3.5"

"Ace of Spades" western ACEO 2.5x3.5"
Since 2009 the ACEO community has produced a deck of cards. Each card features work by an ACEO artist that sells on eBay.

2010 I put my name down for it. My allotted card was the Ace of Spades.

Trying to decide what to do, I couldn't get past my original fascination with this card.

I grew up in the age when we played cowboys and Indians, and there were westerns galore on the TV. To find out that the Ace of Spades has such a shady history with the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok, and known as the 'death card', I never could get out of my mind.

Attending a western re-enactment last year provided some wonderful images, so with a bit of manipulating the pose, etc. This is what I came up with. I did a bit of this under magnification (face, bottles). And I deliberately gave it a very muted color scheme, kinda almost a sepia type photo feeling to it. It sold, and looks great on the actual card.

Hope you like it.

Another beauty, Jillian! What a great sense of action and danger. Amazing detail for watercolor, especially at this tiny size. At a glance, I thought it looked like colored pencil.

Wonderful shading and depth. Great work, and congratulations on the sale!

Pretty awesome Jillian! I've done some ACEO's and it requires lots of patience to get them right! This one is great.

I realize I made a mistake. It is part of the 2011 card deck, not 2010.

Thank you Diane and Jim.

It sold, Diane. Took about 3 months, but I priced it higher than usual by about 3x.
