Hails from Canada
Gmail spam filter and WC

Those of you using Gmail may want to check whether or not Gmail is sending email notices from WetCanvas to your spam folder rather than your primary (or other) folders. I noticed it was doing this to me, which is why I am posting this note.

To do this check, simply click on your name on any post, go to your profile page, and send yourself a message via email. It should show up in your Gmail inbox very quickly; if it doesn't, check your spam folder. If it's there, mark it as not spam and it (and subsequent emails from WC) should wind up in you primary inbox.

The reason this sort of thing happens - and I've seen it on other mailing lists - is that people often just mark their unwanted incoming mail as spam rather than (say) properly unsubscribing from mailing lists. Gmail uses that information to organize its automated spam filters.

The reason to look at this now is that while on site personal messaging here works well, I think a number of people are looking to exchange email addresses in the unlikely event of an F+W Armageddon, and very easy way to do that is by using the option to send a message via email. The sender's email then becomes available to the recipient, who can reply in turn to the sender. That way they both wind up with each other's email address. If, on the other hand, the recipient doesn't want to share their email address, then they can simply not reply, or reply by PM.

(added on edit): BTW, this doesn't mean you should be careless when dealing with email from WC or anywhere else; use normal precautions when relying to unexpected email - for example, don't simply click on links or address, inspect them first.

Cheers;
Chris
