You can rework and re-paint your paintings if them aren't varnished. And galleries will always varnish your paintings themselves if they happened in those galleries or museums, do that professionally and for free.

Aren't there many paintings in museums without varnish? Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, Kirchner, Klee, Beckmann... but protected behind glass.
