Hi all,
In the spirit of advice and assistance found in abundance here, can I suggest to anyone who is in the market for a palette box/pochade and is considering buying from Open Box M to be careful and think twice. As a way of explaining the appalling treatment I have experienced, Mr Douglas Beery, who I gather is the main man, has admitted that they are struggling. From forty years of working in what were small sometimes family run businesses I am aware of and sensitive to the struggles and challenges of business but have also learnt that because we all mess up and stuff happens, how you make it right is probably the best barometer of a well and ethically run business. Unfortunately this is not happening in my particular transaction.
I also realise that thousands of people in the past have had good experiences with Open Box M and so have no wish to list my grievances and possibly have a debate so if you wish to know more or are undecided, you are welcome to PM me.
Regards.Larry
March 8, 2020 at 2:54 pm #905238Further on from the above post I have had contact from Open Box and I have given my word I would add to my comment. In February just gone, having ordered my box in July, having received a damaged box eventually in October and not having received a single reply to my numerous emails complaining of the service, I received a flurry of emails. Some of these were from Open Box M and others from a shipping company telling me that there was a delivery from Open Box on the way and if the address listed wasn’t correct, which it wasn’t, to let them know.
What followed was a number of emails between myself and Open Box, each one more bizarre and of none of which painted(excuse pun) them in a more favourable light. To be fair although this offer was months later it included a compensatory offer of a carrier or kit bag of some sort.
Having initially agreed to accept the box I subsequently declined the offer, the reason being that when I failed to secure a refund or a replacement from Open Box I harried my bank into giving me a refund based on Visa guarantees. So in all conscience I couldn’t accept the box but also whilst the bank might never find out, I would have acted illegally.
However as a side note, it is worth noting that because Open Box refused to take back the damaged box based on the understandable cost in doing so, it actually nullified my Visa guarantee because I hadn’t availed of the traders return policy and my bank explained to me that Visa would not accept the claim based on that. They refunded me as a gesture of good will to a customer of many decades.
To finish, Doug Beery wrote to me telling me of a recent incident in his life, no need for me to go into it, which affected him and consequently his business and life being so short it seemed churlish not to mention unhealthy to bear grudges. I still have a damaged box which admittedly cost me nothing, better than a kick in the ass with a pointy boot and I wish Open Box all the best as I believe that the events, unsatisfactory as they were, were more a reflection of something or anything other than ill will.
So hopefully that squares things off.Larry
August 13, 2020 at 12:15 pm #1323797To add information to your post, I purchased an Open Box M on June 15, 2020 and have been waiting 2 months for the Open Box M products requested. I have not received any response from the company to recent phone calls or emails concerning shipment or receipt of the products and accessories I ordered. At present and although payment is made immediately, I am worried that I might not receive this order. Many other artists recommended this fine product online with no recent discussion of the company’s abilities to handle orders. Unfortunately, there had been no other mentions till I found yours, on Wet Canvas, that Open Box M might be in trouble — so this is a fine lesson learned for me.
I hope the company staff ? sees this post and sends my order right away, because I’d rather receive the Open Box M in good condition than dispute the amount to receive my money back! and if so, I would love to write back on Wet Canvas – that all is well!

August 29, 2020 at 10:07 pm #1329782Never got the box I ordered in May. Had to file a claim with PayPal.
September 16, 2020 at 1:07 pm #1336406I am very happy to add more information to my August 13, 2020 post: Now, September 15, after 3 months, the Open Box M company finally came through with the order I made on June 15.
The box and accessories arrived in good condition and although it is certainly worth the wait, it would have been very nice if minimal customer service was given to know it was still in the works during the 3 months.

October 24, 2021 at 12:53 pm #1443065I’m also having similar issues to those above with Open Box M in 2021. I only found this thread after doing some internet searches while waiting for my order, as it seemed to be taking a very long while. I feel there is a pattern to this issue..I placed my order in August 2021 for it to arrive within 14-18 days but we’re now nudging into November 2021 and I’m still awaiting delivery or at the very least some contact from the seller as to why it is taking so long. I’ve contacted the seller but had no replies. Such a disappointment.
November 17, 2021 at 12:30 pm #1446647Further to my previous post…
I received my order on 16/11/2021 but no response to any of my messages. Pleased with the goods however its tainted by the whole experience. Good luck to anyone reading this in the future
