Scavenger Hunt #623: Feb 25 - Mar 4

Welcome to Scavenger Hunt #623

If you've participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=366347

Here are the rules for the hunt:

*All items on the list must be sketched from life - not imagination or photo reference.

*Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.

*You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.

*All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.

Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don't have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt "week" will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.

Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.

*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyways. Commenting is appreciated but not necessary. ***P

Scavenger Hunt #623: Feb 25 - Mar 4
This Hunt is a try at something different. Rather than drawing precisely what is listed, the goal is to free associate at least 2 or 3 times. Draw that. Then post as normal but include the association.
Example if the list had "dog" the association might be Dog - Cat - Mouse - Mousetrap - Cheese. In this case Mouse is 2nd association, Mousetrap is 3rd and Cheese is 4th. So any of the 3 would be what you draw but include your associations.

Joe — Just want to say how fun this is!

I made a list of all your items with plenty of space between. And then I started writing associations for each of them. It really surprised me where they went 🐾

So far I've done associations for 12 of the items. No more time right now, but later this evening, I plan on finishing associations for all the rest of them ☀️

Thank you so much for this innovative list!!!

Edit: FWIW, I was just counting and my shortest association path so far is 3 (plus your item). The longest so far is 7 (plus your item). Looking them over again, I realized that I could shorten the one with 7 down to 4 and it would still make sense. But it would loose the spirit of the journey. I'd lose the sense of the path. So I'm going to keep all the full paths, wherever they go. It's like taking the scenic route, just for the fun of it!

Another edit: I learning something else starting on these. Once a path is started, it seems easy to know how far to take it. In other words, even if there's something sketchable earlier in the path, if it seemed natural to keep going, then another sketchable item appears. Or if it seems natural to stop, then you just stop! It's turning out to be seamless, and easy, and very fun!!!

To get things going. Here is work in progress (WIP)

1 Yellow - daffodil - flower -2B graphite in 9X12 in sketchbook. Still trying for big and loose. Will shade in tomorrow but wanted to show an example for those who want to do the free association

I used ArtStudio app to increase the contrast so you can see the sketch.

EP This is the Strathmore Toned Gray sketchbook.

Keep sketching
Joe

NOTE THE FREE ASSOCIATION IS FOR FUN. FEEL FREE TO USE THE LIST AS NORMAL

Yay! I'm glad I got home in time to try this one! Those are great starting points for this.
Thanks for the list

( it ended up being 4 days in a row that I didn't sketch anything, but I managed 2 yesterday and one this morning... everything is good. I was up at the Smith River fishing with a friend of mine who I haven't seen for 7 years... using that same reel I sketched a few weeks ago... it was very very beautiful there. )

individuo — Hey Whatcha working on?

Quoting Joe: "NOTE THE FREE ASSOCIATION IS FOR FUN. FEEL FREE TO USE THE LIST AS NORMAL" — Good note! Do you think it would be okay to invoke this for some practice tests I've been trying? They aren't really recognizable sketches or anything, just trying to figure out how to make pencils work, and figure out about water and paper and stuff like that I'm also working on my first association sketch though, so no worries no matter what you decide ☀️

Ned — Welcome home from the great outdoors!

Jo and everybody

I want to use the gray paper as a mid tone so planning to shade in graphite than add white charcoal for the highlights. It is noon already and heading out to post office and PT so does not look like I will get to it today.

EP - This is my first time using the gray paper, just sketching I liked the tooth but adding shading will be bettter judge. So......

item 1 - paper (no associations)

With Joe's permission I was practicing using different papers and pencils - each scribble had one version with water and one without. There was a model, I promise. It was the same model as for #2 (and still pretty much unrecognizable there too )

Tools:

Derwent
..... Inktense watersoluble ink pencils (two)

Caran D'Ache
..... Classicolor watersoluble colour pencils (one)

The various papers are shown on the pic.

Art Studio Pro app for the crop, text, downsize and export.

Process:

None that I can figure out.

Reference located a few inches away.

Pentel
..... mechanical pencil (for 2 or 3 guide lines)

Derwent
..... Inktense watersoluble ink pencils (two)
..... graphite pencils (2B, 9B)

water
..... maybe 99 nanodrops lost forever this time

Borden & Riley - #234 paper (smooth)

Art Studio Pro app for the crop, border, downsize and export.

Process:

Give up.

Reference located a few inches away.

PineCone . On the the first, I like the result on both Borden and Riley papers. Love trying different papers which results in 2 shelves of various types and sizes paper in art closet

The zebra is neat. My eyes kind of finished the face as they were drawn to the strong contrast of the stripes. And who else would get zebra from hometown

Keep sketching
Joe

#1 Yellow - daffodil - flower
Multiple grades of graphite and white charcoal in 9x12 in sketchbook.

EP. I really like this gray toned paper. It has a bit more tooth than the tan toned. Was still easy to get smooth layers of graphite and was great with the charcoal. Definitely will be using it but probably with white color pencil. Charcoal was a bit messy working in my lap. Tried a bit of white pastel pencil but it did not pop like the charcoal. Gel pen is another possible option but have not tried it on this paper yet. But I definitely like this paper.

Keep sketching
