Scavenger Hunt #620 - Feb 1 - Feb 9

Welcome to Scavenger Hunt #620

If you've participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=366347

Here are the rules for the hunt:

*All items on the list must be sketched from life - not imagination or photo reference.

*Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.

*You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.

*All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.

Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don't have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt "week" will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.

Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.

*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyways. Commenting is appreciated but not necessary. ***

I like the list, some thinking involved. :-) Where do I start? Hmmm.

Great list KarmArt ... Thanks.

Today I joined an art sketch event in downtown Bangkok. We visited the art studio of the famous Thai classical-art master artist, Ajarn Chakrabhand at his foundation. He is famous for Thai classical sculpture and painting, making fabric costume arts, and making Thai classical puppets. His studio is full of puppet parts, molds, and backdrop curtain painting area, He also hand paints all of the puppets himself. The sponsor event, ask to borrow our sketches done on today postcards to be displayed as a part of Bangkok Design Week 2020.

#1 multiple -- hanging wooden legs of puppet parts ... done with watercolor and ink

#2 more than 10 years old -- there are several sculpture heads in his studio (but the one on the left was my sketcher friend's head) ... done in directwatercolor style

PS. Below was a part of his handmade Thai classical puppets that he had done. They were displayed at the exhibition part of the same studio.

Ai, how interesting about the puppets. Thanks for sharing the photos and your neat sketch. I like the dark background to highlight the puppet parts.

I sketched on my iPad with the Apple Pencil while Gene rode the exercise bike today. He said I made him too thin, last time I made him too fat. Ha. The app is Brushes.

Number 1, makes me smile (both seeing him and sketching him)

Re: Scavenger Hunt #620 - Feb 1 - Feb 9

Hello everybody!

KarmArt, thank you very much for the interesting list. I see it has 27 items instead of the usual 26, quite appropriate to start February in a leap-year

Ai, what a start of the hunt! Nicely done! Thanks for the beautiful photos too (with a wonderful painting in the last one).

Jo, before reading your comments, and as the pedals are out of view, I though Gene was impulsing himself on a wheeled office chair . Great sketch! and you captured very well his being exerting some force.

Ai - great job on such an unusual object - collection of puppet legs. Oooh a Thai classical puppet looks so good!!

Jo - great job on Gene's profile. Glad to hear that you smile when you see him and when you sketch him

Re: Scavenger Hunt #620 - Feb 1 - Feb 9

Ink and coloured pencil, 5x8" on toned paper

1. new - blue travel mug purchased fall 2019
2. round - blue/black mug with such a lovely rounded side that fits so nicely in my hands.
3. wakes me up - fitbit vibrates to wake me up - such a lovely feeling instead of a shrill buzzing alarm
4. fabric - knitted toque where I dyed the yarn myself and then knitted the toque
5. older than 10 years - this is a wide green mug that I bought in maybe 1997? 1998?

Cheers,

KarmArt — Thanks for an interesting list

It's just that for ages, I've looked outside as often as possible to check for the red supergiant star Betelgeuse, make sure it's still there, make sure it's still okay (unexploded). It's just for fun, but it started looking dimmer recently (Oct.-Nov.???) and dimmer still, now. Turns out that at the same time as everyone down here seems to be having an exceptionally difficult winter (northern hemi), even mighty Betelgeuse up in our skies is having a difficult time of it too 🤕

So navigation through life is always iffy, and with Betelgeuse in trouble, and more difficult than ever to spot through a thin cloud deck, who knows? Which way is north?

But it's all good, and no worries 😌
.
.

item #1 - older than 10 years

Betelgeuse (about 9-10 million years old)

Little scribble of Betelgeuse and Orion's other main stars, tonight, naked eye, in a dull charcoal sky with a thin, interfering haze. Betelgeuse used to be a large, brilliant orange star even without binoculars. Not tonight. Tonight it was a dull, tiny, nearly invisible grayish-white point.

It isn't Betelgeuse's fault that it's dimming.

I ❤️ Betelgeuse.

If interested, there are links below the depressing scribble (including one artsy one).

And I apologize that this scribble is dim and depressing. I didn't plan it that way. And I would have downsized it more for you guys, but then the single pixel that is now Betelgeuse might have disappeared completely 😬

the news about Betelgeuse even made the first APOD of the New Year:
January 1, 2020:
https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap200101.html
(with an exceptional artistic impression from before the dimming)

more info:
January 7, 2020:
https://earthsky.org/space/betelgeus...2020-supernova

are grav waves related?:
January 15, 2020:
https://earthsky.org/space/ligo-grav...ear-betelgeuse
(I'm no longer the only one checking on Betelgeuse at night 🙃 )

Tools:

iPad Pro, Apple Pencil

Procreate app for the scribble.

Art Studio Pro app for the text, crop, downsize and export.

Process:

Defaults.

Reference located ~600-800+ light-years away, but very difficult to be precise with this type of star.

Ai — What an extraordinary place 😌 And your paintings there have a beautiful spirit to them. Love the coloring of the first one especially. It made me feel like I was looking at a memory, even though I've never seen anything like that before. Thank you for taking me there! 🎨

Jo — Wonderful sketch, and words to go with! I agree with individuo, he looks quite purposeful ☀️

EP — Lovely sketch, and such cool and useful stuff! It's interesting that you dyed the yarn yourself. Was that difficult? How long to dry (?cure?) the yarn before you use it?

Here is #3 makes me smile -- a small vase of fresh flowers at our local cafe, done with inks
