Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Shane - beautiful painting! I love your style on this ref and love the background too.

Christel -love the detail in the tulip's petals.

Imelda - lovely work on the iris, I hope you paint more flowers.

Lil - great work on the dahlia. I really like the background too.

Kay - lovely pansy, love those velvety purples.

Viv - beautiful watercolour rose! Lots of lovely colours in those petals. Interesting how we all like a different paper - Arches HP has become one of my favourites.

Bonnie - lovely linos. Really love those shapes and good colour choices too.

Zelda - really like that bold thistle and the rose is gorgeous.

Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Thanks for the references Kay and a challenging challenge!

I had go at the pansy. I used white charcoal and pastel pencils on black paper, size A4. It wasn't easy to photograph!

Thanks for looking.

Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Shane - Color harmony so nice and bright!
Christel - Lovely, as usual
Rundun - You are very gifted at flower painting; you should do more! Very delicate looking.
Kay - velvety look, very nice.
Vivien - Very nice, as hot press is a difficult surface.
Bonnie - How very creative and appealing.
Zelda - These are outstanding and should be framed.
Kay M - This is very striking and bold.

I will post mine tomorrow when I have better light to photograph it.

Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Well, here is my small watercolor on Arches 140CP, about 6 x 7 inches. I only painted a few flowers about twenty years ago, when I first started to dabble. So many paint flowers so well that I never felt an affinity towards the subject. I struggle with having the petals look delicate.

Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Kay M, wow, not easy to do a dark flower on dark support like this, bravo to you and it is stunning! Love the soft texture.

Joy, take a bow because you have nailed it with this tulip and its petals so delicately formed and painted. You are truly a natural with this subject. For such a long time I'd not paint them either as who can really copy God's creation as well as He can No one can, but we can try. Simply gorgeous! I hope you will do more and hope this pretty specimen gets its own frame and is up on your wall

I had another go at the hollies with this tiny 5.5x3 miniature using alizarin crimson + thalo green for the black and adding quinacridone violet and UB in other two. No pencil drawing, just trying to dash off another within 20-30 minutes today. Watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press, #12 round brush. Direct application with only one wash.

Re: January 2020 ~ Plant Parade Challenge

Joy - your painting is beautiful, the petals have that lovely glossy look to them that I like about tulips, and they look delicate to me.

Kay - really like the subtle colour changes in your petals and those lovely bright greens.

Kay M - Great job on the Pansy! And yes Black is a hard color to paint and also to photograph! Glad you joined in and please do join our PP in February as I'm Hosting then!

Joy - For someone who doesn't usually paint flowers - you've made a wonderful watercolor of the black tulip and yes, your petals look very delicate!
I'm Hosting February's PP, so please join us again!

Kay - The Hollyhock is great! Especially as no initial drawing was made!
I'll make the Gallery for you.
