Boats on still water

Gouache on panel
10” x 12”
Painted today from photo reference. I was trying to keep it loose and capture the main tones. Comments welcome.

Patrick I need to get over here more often. This is really a nice work. I really like the way that you have used greys to establish distance. Gary

Gary, thanks for noticing my greys. I have been studying Albert Marquets’ work lately. I aspire to that ability to convey the essence of the subject with color, value and form, rather than with laboriously imitating the details. Maybe I’m a lazy painter.

David, thanks again for looking and commenting, it’s good to hear.

Beautiful! There are so many features of this painting that really appeal to me, I am too overwhelmed to be able to list them. Great job!

Doug, Thank you very much. I see you also use gouache. It’s challanging, one can get subtle color shifts but must be deftly careful when overpainting to change a color passage because although dry, the initial layer easily lifts.

Re: Boats on still water

Quite a unique dusky atmosphere, reminds me of a sunset on a semi-overcast day. Love the calm water too.
