Scavenger Hunt #615: Dec 23-31

Scavenger Hunt #615: Dec 23- Dec 31

If you've participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=366347

Here are the rules for the hunt:

*All items on the list must be sketched from life - not imagination or photo reference.

*Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.

*You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.

*All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.

Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don't have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt "week" will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.

Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.

*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyways. Commenting is appreciated but not necessary. ***

Thanks, EP, for fixing the title date. I'm pretty sure you did that. :-)

Re: Scavenger Hunt #615: Dec 23-31

Hi, all y'all. Merry Christmas from Texas!

I found a few minutes to sketch. The dogs move even when asleep. I started both with their heads where I liked. Chewy on his bone pillow toy and Nala with her head on the arm of the sofa. Chewy immediately looked up so I didn't get his crushed chin. Nala put her head down and I wasn't fast enough to get where her feet were. I put some hair dots on her lips and they look like teeth this small. Sigh. Anyway they are in the big book with Prismacolor pens.

Number 1, dog.

Number 1, dog

Dear all ... Merry Christmas from Bangkok, Thailand !!!

Jo: Lovely dog sketches...you did great trying to sketch life animals.

I sketched our Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant, we had a set of wonderful turkey+ham dinner. Iris and Lily ate all cheese bread before I can pair them with my sketch....I wonder why !!!

#1 sub. junk food with cheese bread -- done with direct watercolor and a touch of black brush pen

Re: Scavenger Hunt #615: Dec 23-31

item #1 - X-large

stars

This is "X-large" because I've been reading some more about large stars since my last SH sketch, and that accidentally led to this new sketch. (More info below the sketch.)

Full disclosure: I really do have a mug with a bunch of big, circular, graphical crowded stars on it.

Like my last sketch, I wanted to simplify and avoid ellipses and shading, so I figured I would flatten it out — sort of unfurl the wall of the mug and ignore the handle. But there were 13 large suns. So I made a sketch of only five.

They all had somewhat terrifying faces. So I ignored the faces. They all had a variety of sharp, spikey rays. Gobs and gobs of them. And they were disconcerting so I ignored them too. Also, the main 13 suns on the real mug are all yellow, and the background is all black (although there are additional colors in the elaborate halos around all those scary-faced suns). So I changed the colors.

Despite all that, I planned to outline and make this graphical, and in that way make it bear some resemblance to the mug I had in front of me, but that just didn't end up happening.

What I'm trying to say is if anyone is upset by the turn this took, or by the fact that it ended up bearing no resemblance whatsoever to the model, please contact the moderators, and they can take it down for you.

More info, if interested:

Even more fascinating to me than the large mass stars (like the incredibly massive nearby R136a1) are the large diameter stars. I just can't wrap my mind around a star like UY Scuti that, if dropped in the center of our solar system to replace the Sun, would engulf Mercury, Venus, EARTH Mars, and Jupiter — and get part-way to distant Saturn.

https://earthsky.org/space/how-big-i...t-monster-star

There are solar system walks (to scale) in various states where a person can actually begin to understand just how far apart our own planets are. So by extension, they could help us understand the unimaginable dimensions of some of the stars that share the Universe. Here's a link to one of those walks. This one is in Ithaca, New York:

Tools:

iPad Pro, Apple Pencil

Procreate app for the background and sketch.

Art Studio Pro app for the crop, border, downsize, and export.

Process:

Virtual acrylic on virtual sanded pastel paper.

Freehand, no drafting tools or tracing, digital or otherwise.

No grid or smoothing or symmetry or cloning, digital or otherwise.

No filters or effects. No color intensification or exaggeration.

Reference really was located a few inches away, for all the good it did.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #615: Dec 23-31

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, or if that isn't your thing, a wonderful end to your year.

Jo: Thanks for the new list. Great dog sketches... and furniture too. Love the legs of that chair.

AI: The cheese bread looks good enough to eat in your sketch, so I can hardly blame anyone for gobbling up your subject matter. Lovely colours and suggestive texture.

Pine Cone: Nice colour combinations and a great composition.

1. Tupperware - Filled with mixed nuts and pumpkin seeds. Yum-yum!
2. Underneath - The floor boards
3. Waste - Brown paper gift wrapping... to be used in the compost bin.
