Scavenger Hunt #614: Dec 15 - Dec 23

Scavenger Hunt #614: Dec 15 - Dec 23
If you've participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/show...366347&page=62

Here are the rules for the hunt:

*All items on the list must be sketched from life - not imagination or photo reference.

*Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.

*You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.

*All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.

Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don't have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt "week" will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.

Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.

*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyways. Commenting is appreciated but not necessary. ***

Joe — Saddle up! Seeing your sketches every day would be amazing 😍 even if it makes me a hypocrit for lurking instead of participating so much of the time. I'd beg if I thought it would help. Actually, maybe I am begging.....

Jo — Yes! Ditto everything I said to Joe 😍

individuo I did the following water-soluble sketch in the middle of the night because I figured if I didn't get to it, I would never do it 😔 😇 😔 I estimate ~20 nanodrops of water were harmed this time in the making of this sketch 💦

Re: Scavenger Hunt #614: Dec 15 - Dec 23

item #1 - broken

tiny chipped glazed ceramic vase — only 1.5" tall in real life (3.8 cm)

Challenge: Mix two different media that you haven't mixed before.

No pencil sketch.

Straight to acrylic ink (which seems more color-saturated, yet more liquid, than soft-body acrylics). Used way too big of a brush with the ink for such a small sketch, so I ruined this right off the bat 😔

Then, while that acrylic ink layer was still wet, went directly to water-soluble Artbars, using lots more water, since I'm trying to learn some way to use water-solubles that I can live with. Alas, that day has not yet arrived 😬 🤖

Last, I used a little bit of water-soluble pencil.

[See relevant caveat at bottom of post.]

Tools:

Non-virtual .....

— Liquitex Professional Ink
......... acrylic ink

— Derwent :
......... Artbars
......... water-soluble wax bars

— Caran d'Ache :
......... Classicolor
......... water-soluble colour pencils

— Fabriano acquarello watercolour block :
......... Artistico traditional white
......... hot pressed, 140 lbs

Process:

Art Studio Pro app for the crop, border, downsize and export.

Freehand. No drafting tools or tracing, digital or otherwise.

No grid or smoothing or symmetry or cloning, digital or otherwise.

No digital color intensification or exaggeration.
[Caveat: This looks brighter on my iPad screen now than when I was cropping, downsizing, etc. (Apparently, I had the screen brightness lower than I realized while I was working on the downsizing and border). So imagine a slightly paler version of this (background especially) to get the real life sketch. Sorry people 🙏 ]

Reference located a few inches away.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #614: Dec 15 - Dec 23

PineCone - we are swapping media. You are using pencils and I went digital.
Procreate with a brush I downloaded called Procreate Pencil. Resized in Art Studio.

1 sitting - digital sketch about 15 minutes. I brought iPad intending to listen to a pastel video while wife was getting MRI but forgot ear pieces. Perspective and proportions are a bit wonky. Chair came out better than the lady

Just looked at list again and got idea for standing.

Keep sketching
Joe

Joe - Wonderful sketch! The person you're sketching [your wife? another waiting denizen?] looks truly beautiful and peaceful 😊 and you do your new Procreate brush proud. Best wishes to your wife ☀️

PineCone - She was just another person waiting. Thank you for kind words.

2 standing - life size Santa. I wanted to do it using pastel brushes but only had time for the drawing. I may go back and try or even draw it in pastels. Was so cool and unique I took couple of photos. This is close to an hour. Lots of layers to draw and redraw.

Keep sketching
Joe

Wow Joe, are you sure that's not one of those still life actors? Very cool indeed 😂 Your sketch is fantastic — I'm looking forward to seeing your further work with it 🎨

Pine Cone - I like your combination of media in your sketch of the vase. There's some nice granulation going on where the media mixed and blended. Nice!!

Joe, that's quite a Santa for a waiting room. Usually you see decorations on table tops and if anything they might have a tree that is that big. lol You did a good job on the stealth sketch of the woman in the waiting room and the Santa sketch has really nice detail. Hope you show us the final piece if you add to it.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #614: Dec 15 - Dec 23

EP, Jo and Joan T, hello!

Pine Cone, the nanodrops told me no harm was done, they were crying of emotion, not of pain. I love it! great start for the hunt. I'm very happy to see you are back to sketching and experimenting. Have fun.

Joe, you are always super accurate in any media. The woman looks very good to me. And as Joan T say, if you give a go to Santa with pastels post the result here as well, or a link to its own thread so that we don't miss it. Best wishes regarding your wife's health, I hope it's nothing serious or problematic.
