Terri, I'm glad you liked the challenge!
Very cool portrait, the background looks like blue flames and makes her look as if she has some supernatural power and she intense glance adds to this feeling! you did a great job, a painting with a character!

I think I recognize the Specialist Mars Violet in her hair btw, I have ordered some Arches Oil Paper will be able to try it in a couple of weeks.

Oh, by the way, I totally missed to write a comment about your "change the old ugly painting" work last month, but I saw it and your version is so much fun! I hate the original too (so depressive! I agree with all your impressions about it), and love it how creatively you came up with the modern version!

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Here is mine still not much time to paint, so I went for something easy I had a "trial" piece of white Hahnemuhle Velour paper which I only tried once before (and didn't like it: my Mungyos wouldn't really layer on it) and I tried my Specialists on it. You know, I love my Specialist, but this brand is kinda picky when it comes to the surface choice so I've been experimenting with different surfaces...

The Specialist works on this Velour paper MUCH better than Mungyo Gallery does! Apparently this paper is best suited for dry pastels or at least for the harder OP brands like Cray-Pas Specialist or at least Van Gogh (I guess). Mungyos are a bit too oily for it.

Some closeups:

PS: I definitely want to paint the Main Coone this month

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Thanks so much, Mira! I've decided to name this one: "Listen to Me."

The Specialists I used here are the burnt sienna, and the pale cobalt blue - an awesome color!!

It's exciting to hear that you ordered some of the Arches Oil paper. I hope you like it! I know it takes multiple layers of the Mungyos, and the Specialists should be no problem, either. Once you have a few layers, oil pastels move beautifully around and are easy to control.

Oh, I just saw your last comment about the "ugly old painting" November challenge and the last painting I did. Thank you! I had fun doing that one.

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Mira, this is lovely work! The Specialists seem to layer nicely on this velour paper.

Your experiments do show how important certain op/paper combinations can be! Not every op brand will work the same on various papers. It's wonderful that you found a paper that takes your Specialists so nicely!

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Thanks, Christel and Terri! yes, actually the Specialist likes this paper as much as Pastelmat but unfortunately this paper is also expensive. But I'll keep in mind that it works well, especially when one wants to paint a furry animal or something fluffy

I will definitely post something when I've tried Arches Oil Paper and will tell you guys about my impressions

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Happy holidays, guys!

It's almost the end of the month, but I still have two paintings to go. One is the Maine Coon (haven't started yet), the second one is half way through:

Cray-Pas Specialist on Arches Oil Paper, A3 (yes! I've finally bought this paper!). At this stage I have tried to figure out the values. I think the legs/feet looks a bit strange, but maybe I'll be able to fix it later.

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Looks good so far, Mira. I wouldn't be concerned about the feet in this one - remember the subject is wearing socks, which can be pulled any which way. Your basic foot and leg outlines look fine. Glad the Arches arrived! I think the Specialists look like they are blending nicely here. They seem to be filling those tiny little Arches-nibbles smoothly.

Boy, the holidays really do insert themselves - I can hardly believe the month is almost over! I'm trying to finish up another funky kind of portrait for this challenge. Still messing with just the background, but the portrait is probably finished enough to get a couple photos and post.

Re: December Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

Here is my other funky portrait for this challenge:

Not quite as wild as the first one, but I liked using the browns, and playing with some vignetting. They are mainly Neopastels, a few Mungyos, on Arches oil paper.

I went again to the WC RIL to hunt for a ref photo. The gentleman in the photo had all this seriously long hair, couldn't resist!
