November 2019 Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

NOVEMBER 2019 OIL PASTEL CHALLENGE!

There are three challenges for the month - which can be tackled separately or all combined into one:

The challenges are...

--------------------------------------------------------------

1) Fabrics! People wearing clothes, animals sleeping on blankets, stuffed toy still lifes, washing on the line in a landscape; anything fabric.

--------------------------------------------------------------

2) That Painting from the Past that you've never liked - now's your chance to paint a version that pleases you! Choose an artwork you hate that's more than a hundred years old, and reinvent it. Make it relevant, make it more aesthetically pleasing, make it new. It doesn't really have to be one you hate but yours MUST be different to the original, no straight out copies. Bring your style into it, your own perspective, your more modern viewpoint. Please post the original along with your version.

--------------------------------------------------------------

3) A Series of Miniatures! Six or more paintings with a maximum size 6" x 4", which make a complete series or set when viewed together. Any subject, any style. When the series is completed please photograph them all together and post, but you're welcome to post singles as you progress.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Please tell us the size, surface, and materials used when you post your paintings, and feel free to post studies and sketches. There's no 'reveal' day, post whenever you like. That's it, guys, happy painting!

Wow, exciting and creative challenge, Sarah! Thanks for these great ideas, I already know what I want to paint. Hopefully I'll have enough time for at least two of your suggestions

Christel, is December vacant and can I host it? I got inspired by Sarah's challenge and got some ideas

Sarah, thank you!

I have already started the series of 6 paintings but taking a photo of it is causing trouble. I thought only wet oil paintings cause problems. Need to wait sunshine until Monday. It's very cloudy now.

Re: November 2019 Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat

I managed to photograph this morning at the terrace my "Poor Creepy Kitty" -series paintings despite the clouds. Here are the two first oil pastel experiments of this challenge. Eyes were difficult or almost impossible to draw with thick Van Gogh student grade oil pastels. Size: 6" x 4". Paper: Arches Dessin Pastel & Fusain 130 g/m2 or 60 Lbs.

I painted this actually first but posted second. Eyes are quite terrible: I might try to fix the right eye (and many others parts of the painting ) for the final set of six. The result is quite horrible but I'm having good time painting this challenge.

Great going, Moscatel! If the eyes are a problem, use cp for them.

Christel, thank you!
By cp do you mean color pencil? That is wise advice because in miniature size big pastel sticks are challenge ..

Moscatel, lovely cats and the idea! I like how the ochre color is repeated both in the cat's fur and in the veggies.

Sgraffito can help with the eyes, I think
For small sizes I like to use small thin OP sticks like Pentels

Mira, thank you!
First time I hear sgraffito. Just saw an interesting video of it in youtube. I'll see if I find something sharp in the studio. I used oil painting palette knife for eyes, but it didn't quite work.

Moscatel, I love your cats! You captured a fun expression in the second one you posted (your first painting), wonderful! Love the series so far.
