Dreams of creating a picture book

My work is up here: https://yvonnekeoghart.blogspot.com/. I'm thinking to write and illustrate and self-publish some kind of picture book - to do it all myself - mainly because I'm totally naive about agents or what it takes to succeed in this business. I'm not sure of the quality that's expected in the publishing world. I'm self-taught - totally lost in the business side of things. Not even sure what medium to illustrate in. I paint a lot these days but I used to draw a lot.

Give it a go!

I made a book of landscape paintings, designed it on the free Scribus software and had it printed by a digital printer at a very economical cost. Here's how.

I've been thing about doing this myself but I would like to afford some decent copyright to make sure if I put any idea near and dear to my heart that its properly protected.

Any experiences to share? Is it even possible in this internet age where only big corporations have the money to defend it?

Re: Dreams of creating a picture book

When does copyright start? Do I have to register with the government to obtain a copyright?
No. In Canada, copyright protection exists as soon as a work is created, provided that the conditions of Copyright Act have been met.

If you put things on the internet/social media then prepare for them to get shared, if you don't like that idea then don't share them in the first place. If you put them on the internet and someone rips them off and makes money from them, then that's a different matter. Pepe the Frog is a good example.

Your work is copyright as soon as you make it. It is wise to include a copyright statement in your book. Mine was for gifts and personal sales, so I didn't have to go as far as an ISBN number and barcode.

Re: Dreams of creating a picture book

Still dreaming...to illustrate and to write and to self-publish! Right now I'm just sketching sketching sketching, trying to figure out where to start, what I might stick with. So I'll start here. My style and my medium is still all over the place (lots going on in my life) but I'm really loving the experimentation.

Re: Dreams of creating a picture book

Blurb are very good for making books and you can sell via the site. I did one of my seascapes. Good quality result.

I recently acquired 2 furry lodgers and a series of cartoons just grew from that. I started putting them on my fb page and people suggested I do a book. Talking to friends (one very IT literate ) it was suggested that I use Amazonís templates, which enables you to sell via them with anISBN number. You can also do an ebook version. That might suit you? No outlay as they print on demand and send you your share automatically. You can see my cartoons on fb page or their own page on fb that I made, Life with Kittens
. Donít want to put my image on your thread

I did several illustrated books for my grandchildren that I simply printed myself using Publisher. Some I had inbound, others I stitched or tied with nice string through punched holes.

I like your drawings

Re: Dreams of creating a picture book

Thanks for all the info and encouragement Vivien. I did look up your paintings on Facebook (I really like your landscapes). For publishing I'm looking for the easiest most painless way to start so was thinking along the same lines. First I need to write and illustrate it lol. Pets are great inspiration.
