Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

Here's my tonal drawing of a girl from a photo in the RIL.

OP and ink on paper, 12 ins sq.

I was going to do more to this drawing...in the way of shaping the face, but decided this morning that it was OK like this...as a sketch.

I like it - reminds a bit of ancient Greco-Roman art...

I just happened upon this thread, it looks interesting but I don't know what goes in here or who can participate.

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

thevaliantx, hi, post your paintings. talk.

I don't have any new paintings to post. Yesterday I used acrylic gesso tinted with acrylic bronze paint on cold pressed watercolor 140lb. Managed to glue sides of the paper to the board it was drying on. So lesson learned. It was an experiment for me.

Here is an artist I didn't know of Nicholas Roerich.

Treasure of angels

1904-1905. Exhibited in 1911 in Moscow

I think it is tempera.

Also think this is a busy piece for him, most of what I've looked at is more quiet. Love his colors.

credit Wikipedia.

He has an amazing oeuvre.

Hi Robin, is that sketch in your hand made journal? Looks great!

Hi June, lovely girl. Nice shading to her head. Her features are very attractive.

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

Since this thread is in the Classical Art section, what sorts of paintings are we to post in here?

Anything. You will find that most of what is posted here isn't classical. I don't know how that happened, but I don't mind at all. This is just a pleasant section of the board where everyone gets to post whatever they have been up to, and styles vary from quite realistic and classical to very stylized.

Nickel - I will have to go look up Roerich. I like the bit you posted.

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

Brian, glad you liked the Roerich.

Yesterday, tinted gesso more watercolor paper, still experimenting, this time paper did not stick, waited till it was really dry. The paper released itself, mostly, still a little stuck.

The gold paint came, lovely, Robin you are going to love it. Nice and creamy and deeply pigmented. Used a dedicated brush to test, and a glass jar for water. Just trying to keep the mica out of other paints. Reminds me of Christmas glitter. Mica migrates to it's surroundings.

Here's a painting I could see anyone painting today. She is lovely and ready to party. Think she got photobombed on the lower right.

Constantin Somov.
Columbine's Little Tongue. 1915.
Watercolor and gouache on paper pasted on cardboard.
The Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.

What do you think about this composition? I like it.
Very different from above. ^

That painting by Somov is very much to my taste. The Delacroix less so, but it might just be the reproduction.

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

And the latest bit:

Acrylic on board, 420 x 297 mm.

Took me ages to do, with all those leaves that had to be individually painted, and the result is perhaps not much to write home about. But it was fun and taught me the one and other. :-)

One of my favorite flowers. All those heart leaves, cupid can't be far away. Love the greens and of course the blue. Love the weight of the goose. Very nice.

Thanks. Yes, I was well aware of the possible symbolism of the heart-shaped leaves, but the picture's genesis is more mundane: this month's project in the Floral and Botanicals section of WC is morning glory, so that is where I got it from. ;-)

And promptly made another, for a project in the miniature forum:

Acrylics on canvas board, 7 x 5 inch.

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

Heres a graphite sketch of a guy wearing a hat(based on a photo from RIL). For the 29faces project. We are at day 20. Wow, it is fun to do but quite a committment.

The practice should help when it comes to making paintings later!!

Re: cafe michelangelo- september 2016

I doubt if I'll ever have the discipline to go through with a thing like the 29 faces. Well, at least in such a short time. I once decided to do 120 small "daily" paintings, and it took me something like five years to complete them. :-)

Here's the latest bit:

It was initially a total disaster of bad composition and drawing. I don't know what the heck I was thinking. I decided to try to salvage it by adding a lot of stuff and changing the color scheme a bit. Not sure I really succeeded, but anything would look better than the first version (which I would not post here even if I took a photo of it - some embarrassments are too big for publication.) :-)

Acrylic on board, 20 x 25 cm (= about 8 x 10 inch)
