And now for something completely different:

Acrylic on board, 21 x 30 cm. Another exploration of the naive style. or whatever one should call it. :-)

Acrylic on board, 18 x 13 cm (about 7 x 5 inch).

I may or may not decide to tweak it a little bit...

Quick and rough sketch of a well known face. Well, at least around here, where he's a national hero... :-)

Re: cafe michelangelo- july 2016

I have been experimenting with mixed media imaginative portraits. Basically, trying out lots of media in one painting. Here's the most recent effort. Its so enjoyable to do.

It has collage, crayons, acrylics, pens, etc etc. Playtime really.

Speaking of playtime, Carla Sonhein has a kids art prograame...you can join or encourage kids to try this summer.

Its at

Re: cafe michelangelo- july 2016

Nice portrait! Very imaginative. I am not much into mixed media in my own work, though I suppose one could use the term for watercolor or colored pencil combined with line work in pen.

A recent sketch:

You got that right: winter is coming. I made all manner of errors, couldn't work out how to fix them without introducing new ones, and eventually did not so much complete the sketch as give up on it.

A few of my drawing pupils had better luck. I had them draw a portrait of Mandela, and some actually managed:

(Looks a bit like Sidney Poitier, who once played the role of Mandela!)

These ones are pretty good, or at least not bad for grade 7 kids. I sure couldn't draw like this in grade 7:

Today's acrylic; 18 x 13 cm:

I swing between liking it and wondering what the hell I was thinking. :-)

Hi brian. I really like the kid's portraits of Mandella. Well done, so expressive.
The flowering plant makes me think,' reaching for the sky or the stars'. Dramatic. Is that aloe vera?

Well, it's some sort of aloe. We have many species here, and this time of year they're in flower. But I used several different reference photos, of several different species. :-)

I thought it might be boring to have the aloe stand up straight (and in reality, they often lean a bit). But looking at it now, the lean bothers me - perhaps I should have had it stand at attention after all...

Re: cafe michelangelo- july 2016

Wonderful work, Brian.....congratulations.....love the upfront sunflower approach.......and the tan plain forground with the row of leaf shaped trees
Your compositions are enjoyable and then all the color and shapes are extra perks......loveit

June - love me some collage The textures are entrancing......the little beckoning animal...so sweet and tender.... thanks.

Hi susan

Got a new pen - Carbon Ink desk fountain pen.....only $12 and very fine nib is not my first choice but I'm getting used to it. Saw in recommended on a blog interview....

anyway this sketch was begun with out inspiration and with fear of uglyness.....so I just said why don't you go ahead and make an ugly shape. then I repeated it a few times and then made another ugly shape and went on repeating it and added one more ugly shape and LOW AND BEHOLD a pattern and the thing started to not look tooo ugly.....and I was freed up quite a bit........good art therapy
