Surrealism project- May and June 16

Surrealism.
(project surrealsim revisited, requested by Lisa)

What is surrealism?

' Andre Breton is considered the leader of the Surrealist movement, and he defined Surrealism as a pure state of mind that allows someone to express thoughts freely without the encumbrance of rational thought and societal rules. He and the other Surrealists were trying to introduce more open, free-thinking concepts that would allow people, particularly artists, to be aware of themselves without influence from the outside world. Breton pushed artists to look into their unconscious minds for inspiration. '

'All sorts of techniques and phenomena were employed to achieve this subconscious creativity, including dreams, hallucinations, automatic or random image generation - basically anything that circumvented the usual "rational" thought processes involved in creating works of art.'

The above are quotes from the internet. e.g.,
http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/hist...surrealism.htm

Who are your favourite surrealist artists?

Post your favourite surrealist painting by another artist?

How do you get your inspiration for painting surreal art?

Some practical advice would be great!!

These are just a few questions to get the ball rolling.

Actions:

1. Please fell free to jump in by posting your own surrealist artwork done for this project this month and tell us how you arrived at your imagery.

2. Also please add your links to interesting pages for us to consider as we paint and draw in a surreal manner for the months of May and June.

This sounds fun, Dorothea Tanning is one of my favorite surrealists. If I have time I may do a study of one of her paintings for this project. http://www.dorotheatanning.org/

I'm so glad that this theme is back.
I love this kind of art and its hard to say who I like best, I like many, but this Russian artist is very, very talented IMO.

Re: Surrealism project- May 16

Dorothea Tanning looks like a very interesting surrealist to study, Cassandra. Very realistic treatment in her work, as with Dali!

Lisa, that is a very intriguing painting of the egg tree. How did this come about? I see lots of allusions to family tree, people of earth, mother goddess. Are these some of the things you were thinking of whilst painting?

I did a surreal tree painting years ago and I will try to find it and post it. Its an image I may revisit and repaint for this project perhaps.

Robin, I don't know which surrealist artist you may be thinking of? Was his first or last name beginning with R?

Re: Surrealism project- May 16

hi June.

I'm glad you like it, yes it started as a tree, then came the idea to nature, as women who populate the earth and take care of nature and life time.

Re: Surrealism project- May 16

I found my surrealist 'Tree' painting. This was painted around 2006. My goodness 10 years ago! It started life as a small pencil sketch and then I attempted to paint it. It shows my interest in monkeys. I don't paint in this style these days. Maybe I will redo it sometime.

The monkey tree, acrylics on paper, 12 by 8 ins.

Hi Lisa and robin! Lovely paintings.

The path to heaven is very striking and monumental. I love the straight pathway up and the apple suggesting temptation.

Robin. Those are wonderful prehistoric birds.

Lovely originality in both.
